Unhappy RIP Michael Crichton

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/...n4575403.shtml

Quote:
Best-selling author and filmaker Michael Crichton died unexpectedly in Los Angeles Tuesday, after a courageous and private battle against cancer, his family said in a statement. He was 66.

Crichton was a brand-name author, known for his stories of disaster and systematic breakdown, such as the rampant microbe of "The Andromeda Strain" or dinosaurs running amok in "Jurassic Park," one of his many million-selling books that became major Hollywood movies.

Crichton also created the hospital drama "ER" for television. His most recent novel, "Next," about genetics and law, was published in December 2006.

Christ, I didn't even hear about this until today, but damn. He was one of my favorite authors, behind Vonnegut. The way he blended real science with a "worst case scenario" made for some really entertaining stories. It's a shame when the world loses a great talent.

I read about this yesterday, and it made me very sad. He was an author whose work I truly loved. May he rest in peace.

I'm embarrassed to say I've never really explored his works. Recommendations for a good starting point?

I think Jurassic Park was one of the first "adult" books I read

Adromeda Strain and Sphere are very very good, as are Jurassic Park and Congo. IMO

Since you've probably already seen the movies for his popular books like JP, Congo, Andromeda Strain, pick up one that wasn't made into a movie. Prey was pretty exciting.

After Jurassic Park 3 came out, you knew it was only a matter of time.
RIP
