Jon Oliva's Pain -- Yonkers, NY -- October 8th, 2008
Yes, two nights in a row. Where to start...
Well for those that don't know, my band had the honor of opening the Jon Oliva's Pain / Circle II Circle / Manticora show in Allentown, PA on October 8th, and despite the weak attendance, things went great. We hit it off really well with the bands and touring personnel alike, so much so that everyone basically demanded we come to the show in New York. They wound up putting us on the guest list which means not only did we get in for free, we got into a 21+ show, no questions asked, and I am only 18.
So, my sister and I got to the venue at about 6:30-ish, and talked to a few people before going on a spontaneous trip with Lars from Manticora, as well as their friend/merch-guy Radu, back to their hotel to get a few things before the gig. It wound up being an hour or more of blindly navigating through the worst road systems in the world (those around the George Washington Bridge), eventually finding the hotel, and getting back to the venue about 30 minutes before Manticora went on.

Great set, really tight and entertaining band. I really enjoyed them.
The time before and after their set was mainly spent by talking to the many people I knew which happened to be at the show also. I also took the time to talk to the crew guys a little more, who were surprised we came the 2+ hour drive to see them all again.

12.Turns to Me (Savatage)
Amazing show again. Zak's voice is in absolutely incredible shape for a guy his age (42), who has been singing on tour for as many years as he has. The band were all great, though I have to say Bill Hudson is a huge misfit for the band. He's a nice guy but he just doesn't really fit. Tom Drennan handed me a drum stick at the end of the set. Highlights for me were Waiting, Heal You, Echoes, Revelations, and the two Savatage songs at the end.

Not enough positive thoughts can be said from me really. Jon Oliva is a legend and rightfully so. The band were quite tight, Jon's vocals sounded surprisingly good considering he's been abusing his voice for two and a half decades now. His crowd interactions absolutely make the show for the people up front, and luckily this time I was front row, directly in front of him. The songs with Zak and Chris Caffery were absolutely excellent, Edge of Thorns feeling particularly special, seeing the 3 of them together on stage. They looked like they were having a really great time, and the small but mighty crowd definitely were feeling it. Highlights were far too many too count, I would come only a few shy of naming the entire set list. John Zahner gave me his set list at the end of the gig.
So, for most the night would end there, but quite fortunately it didn't for us.
We were allowed back to the "backstage" room where all 3 bands were hanging out with close friends and such afterwards. Since I had already gotten all pictures/signatures the previous night, I was actually able to socialize with everyone, talk a bit, and fit in. Zak Stevens is one of the nicest, most personable people I've ever met. I again got to talk to Jon a little bit about things, and I truly understand what I've heard about Jon treating fans like family. It was just a really great experience.
And it still does not end there. After everything was over and all the gear loaded up, the Manticora guys asked us if we wanted to come to the diner up the street to get some food with them, so we gladly obliged, putting a really awesome conclusion on an absolutely incredible two days.
Oh yes, and we got home at 5:50 am.

I so wish I had been able to see this tour. I tried helping the tour director Hoyt find a venue in the RI/MA/CT area to could get this tour too, but none of the venues or promoters gave him the time of day . Not even a 'no', but no answer at all.
