Ridiculous that a Hitchcock-directed, Olivier and Caine-starring movie wouldn't be out on a ten-year old technology, but whaaaaaaaaatever.

I'm still in the process of replacing my DVDs with Blu-Rays. I've got about 20 more to go, but luckily most of the them are old enough that the BD versions are cheap. There are a few that haven't been converted yet (most notably Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski), though. I'm still debating on whether or not to get Lord of the Rings; I'm sure it looks amazing, but they're only the theatrical versions. If it do get them, I'll hang on to my extended version DVDs. Then there's the question of whether to get Star Wars when that comes out this year, but I don't even want to get into that now

When I bother getting around to getting a blu-ray player I'll re-buy, like 10 important movies and that's it. Upscaling players make DVDs look perfectly good enough. Especially old stuff that wasn't even filmed in HD anyway. Sure there's probably a bit of a difference, but frankly neither your or my eyes are good enough to notice :p

![]() 2D animation doesn't gain anything from the conversion, either, though I suppose that probably goes without saying. Disney's really pushing blu-ray and I don't get it. The only thing I can really say I enjoy more in HD is nature-related documentaries or something like that. Even if they were there to be seen in the first place (which they're not), I don't need to be able to see every tiny detail on Cinderella's glass slipper in immaculate high definition. The best they can do for a traditionally animated film is, what, sharpen the lines? BATB on DVD is fine. I've seen some screencaps of the blu-ray, and I don't even think I like how hard the lines are. Sort of distracting to me. |
