no no no no no. on both counts. nwa was historically significant, but their skills back then were crappy. both cube and dre did their best work later.
with krs-one, public enemy, mos def, and talib kweli, you're on the right track, son. although i'm finding kweli's getting stale. i'd say you should check The Roots (anything probably, but their latest two albums -- Game Theory and Rising Down -- are as good a place as any to get on board), Illmatic by Nas, Desire by Pharaoh Monche, Food and Liquor by Lupe Fiasco, and Steal This Album by The Coup.

That's a great album, but its extremely cryptic. There's so much slang and allusion, that if you're a white kid living in the suburbs you aren't gonna know what the hell he's talking about. I suggest waiting on that one until you've owned enough rap albums to decipher alot of hip hop slang.

Anyone familar with DJ Green Lantern? He used to DJ for Eminem and 50 Cent, he's worked with Ludacris, appeared on 'Run's House', worked behind the scenes on Chapelle's Show, and is currently working with Busta Rhymes, Immortal Technique, Jay-Z, and Fort Minor. Pretty good at what he does.

Well, most of the places that I go to look (FYE, used CD stores, etc) they dont carry it, but if they do, its around 20 bucks. Since I havent heard anything off it, I dont want to drop that much right off the bat. Was hoping to sample it first.

![]() Would anyone recommend any basics for someone who is considering diving a little deeper into the genre? All I'm aware of (literally - I have almost NO starting points whatsoever) genre-wise is what's currently popular in high school (basically, "TITS 'N WEED MUTHAFUCKA"), NWA, 2Pac...basically anyone that's been deified in the last few years and is popular as holy fuck as a result. ...Help.

Well it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for music (or "beats" to use a proper colloquialism), then check out Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle (which is a bit of an NWA associate but it is what it is), Beastie Boys Check Your Head or Paul's Boutique (which also works for lyrics) or Lauryn Hill's Misdeducation.
if you want lyrics, get Nas's Illmatic, Boogie Down Productions Criminal Minded, anything by Eric B & Rakim (or Big Daddy Kane), or Public Enemy's Nation of Million's to Hold us Back!
