Nine Inch Nails Releases Internet Album (9 Tracks Are Free)

Nine Inch Nails is a pulling a pseudo-Radiohead by giving away the first nine tracks of a 36 track album. 36 tracks?!? The rest of the album can be downloaded for $5, or fans can exercise more options for a real or other packages. Nine Inch Nails isn't exactly metal but I do take note of these things as how it may impact the business in the future.

What do you all think of these kinds of giveaways?

I think it rules, big time. Trent's always had a disdain for the music biz, and they recently broke from their label, which he announced with quite a bit of glee. I think it gives the artists a lot more freedom. BTW, the cost of the deluxe 4 LP vinyl edition of the album? $300. They're releasing a regular version of it for a normal price in April.

Yeah I like this. I'll be getting the 2CD version when it comes out though. I prefer to have that, still.

Another cool thing about it is that it's released under a Creative Commons Share-Alike license, which means that it is legal to share and distribute as much as you like, i.e. it's perfectly legal to put it on a file-sharing site. I've listened to the first two parts (the whole album is instrumental, and the songs are pretty short, so it only really feels like a long double album), and I really like it so far.

EDIT: Did I mention that the deluxe CD edition comes with multiple digital formats of the tracks so you can make remixes? I don't think it's a stretch to say that this could completely revolutionize the way people make albums.
