The early Sabbath records hardly sound "doomy" to me, outside of a song or two. They are downright funky. That's what makes them so far superior to anything Sabbath did after.

"Funky" is the last thing that comes to mind when I think of early Sabbath.

Seriously? Listen again. The Wizard has one of the funkiest beats I've ever heard. War Pigs has killer grooves, and so does Hand of Doom, and so does Fairies Wear Boots. Or the chorus of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Hole in the Sky. The bass work in N.I.B. Sabra Cadabra. A National Acrobat has some incredibly funky parts. I mean, outside of maybe Iron Man and Sweet Leaf, I'd say it's endemic.

By that logic the entire Pantera catalog is "funky."

I see what you're saying but I wouldn't call it "funk." Also I'm sure there are one or two moments in the Dio catalog also has this "funk" you're speaking of.

"The Wizard" is unquestionably one of the most awesome drum performances ever, but funky? No.

The Wizard is extremely funky. Even if you don't think the rest of the early Sabbath is funky, The Wizard is funky as all hell.

And yeah, 'The Wizard' is just not funk to my ears.

Ya'll are too white for your own good, then.

edit: I didn't say "funk." I said "funky." A lot of Parliament does not hold a candle to "The Wizard" in terms of funky.
