About to watch Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. I have to write a paper comparing it with two earlier Westerns, Shane and High Noon, having Homer's Iliad in mind in thematic terms.

Ugh, I hated Shane in 8th grade. I dunno if I've changed my mind at all but chances are, nope.

I thought it was pretty great for what it was--the canonical, typical American Western. If you can get past the blatant 1950s moral underpinnings--that's no frontier family you're looking at, they're as suburban as mom and apple pie, and for fuck's sake, the family consists of Joe(seph), Marian, and a conspicuous "golden child"--it's a solid piece of 50s Hollywood magic with plenty of adept filmmaking to appreciate and enjoy.
