Iron Maiden -- Irvine, CA -- October 21st, 2006 (Fe Maiden's Review)
I arrived at my local concert venue (Irvine Meadows) AKA Verizon Wireless Amp. at about 6:45. The doors had not opened yet. Waited in a LONG ass line to get in. I was amazed at how many people had on black shirts (most of them Maiden shirts). It must have been well over 90% black shirts on people. I started to feel that this night may be special like 1/31/04 of the DOD tour. Anyone that was there knows the special vibe that night had. I was worried that I may not get a good spot on the lawn but I hustled up there and got a pretty decent spot.
Sat through the opening band Three Inches Of Blood. All their songs sounded the same to me. I really did not care for them at all! Some more waiting and talking with people. Many of them had no clue at all what the setlist would be!!! I kept my mouth shut so as not to ruin the surprise for them. I just knew this show was going to kick ass despite not being so sure about the WHOLE album being done live. My anxiety to hear the new songs live kept building. Then at about 9:12 the infamous Doctor Doctor is heard through the PA. A brief intro and then Maiden hit the stage. You could just feel the electricity in the crowd as they started. We all know the set by now but here it is for the record: 1. Different World 2. These Colours Don't Run 3. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns 4. The Pilgrim 5. The Longest Day 6. Out of the Shadows 7. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg 8. For the Greater Good of God 9. Lord of Light 10. The Legacy 11. Fear of the Dark 12. Iron Maiden --Encore-- 13. 2 Minutes to Midnight 14. The Evil That Men Do 15. Hallowed Be Thy Name GREAT SHOW!!!! Awesome stage and lighting! The sound was..........well pretty damn good for most of the show. Maybe it was just me but the first two songs seemed that Bruce was buried in the mix a bit and the volume was not loud enough. It got better though after that. Hell, I could have gone for a bit more volume throughout the show but it was OK. I agree with what es156 said in his review of the Chicago show. The new album is fantastic sounding live and does come acroos a bit heavier than on the CD. Highlight songs for me were Out Of The Shadows, FTGGOG, ROBB, Lord Of Light, and of course HBTN! It surprised me to hear a bit of the crowd booing after about song 7 or 8 of AMOLAD but they were few and far between. Overall, I think the crowd was awesome and Bruce and the boys seemed to agree! Bruce said "WE WILL BE BACK!!!" I can't wait! Edit: I may have more to add to this later as I gather my thoughts and relive the show in my mind a bit. Edit: When Bruce did his talk after The Longest Day, the crowd was so pumped that we all began chanting Maiden...Maiden...Maiden... It turned into one of those moments where the crowd took over and the band just stared at each other, smiling...waiting for us to stop...it took some time for us to stop. It was a cool feeling to be pleasing the band in such a way! Bruce was in AMAZING form - I've never seen him THAT energetic on stage. We all know how he runs around like a madman, but tonight he topped himself. He sang EXTREMELY WELL and he had the crowd in the palm of his hands. I also cannot say enough about ADRIAN!!!!!!! He is the MAN!!!! He nailed everthing he played and I LOVED the fact that HE got to do the intro to 23:58 rather than Jan as he did on BNW and GMETID tours. One of the best Maiden shows ever!!! I'm still in my post-Maiden euphoric state and it's been 4 days since the show!!!!

Speaking of pictures, I'm pissed. The Tweeter Center info said NO CAMERAS whatsoever, so we didn't even attempt to bring a camera inside... then we get inside, and every other person has a camera. I was pissed.
But good review man, I'm starting to think too many people on this board saw Maiden haha. |
