Cool Queensryche VIP Show -- New York, NY -- 9-20-06

First off, before I get into all the details, here’s the short version.

Queensryche was amazing and they played these songs:

The Whisper
Damaged
Empire
Sign Of The Times
Anybody Listening?
Desert Dance
The Lady Wore Black
Right Side Of My Mind
Last Time In Paris
? I didn’t catch this one, but Tate said it was about his hometown and memories
Silent Lucidity
? Didn’t get this one either, but it had the words “last time...” in it
Jet City Woman
— Encore —
Walk In The Shadows
Take Hold Of The Flame

...and now the long version

This wasn’t part of the Mindcrime II tour, but this was a separate charity that they decided to do while they were on the road. It included a special VIP show and a bike ride into the city. The money from this went to the VH1 Save The Music charity.

I got my Dad to go along with me on this, he didn’t care much about the band, he only went for the bike rides. We got to the bike dealer at about 3-3:30ish and registered, there was also a booth next to that table that had a raffle going for a chance to win a new Harley Heritage. So I put down 20 bucks and signed up. The odds of winning are about 1 in 1800, winner gets picked Saturday, you never know. I also bought a shirt. As I was standing there some 10 year old kid complemented me on my patches. His mom asked him what his favorite ones were and he said “either Megadeth or Iced Earth” I told his parents that they had a smart kid. The band was just walking around and mingling with everyone. They’re a great bunch of guys, really down to earth and not pompous assholes like other famous bands. Classic Rock station 103.7 was braodcasting live from the event. There was free food being given out and the Erik Buell band was playing. There were also the girls from Hustler walking around in tight skimpy clothes. It was a little weird seeing girls in person who you’ve seen getting banged in movies before. About a dozen or so cops showed up too, they would be escorting us into the city. Queensryche decided to get on the bus and head out at around 4ish, Tate and Stone stayed behind to ride in with us. Aside from that it was mostly people talking about each other’s bikes and comparing their customs. Like any typical bike gathering they were all mostly Harleys, cept for a few Suzukis, a Triumph, the beautiful Honda Rune, and of course my Dad’s Indian. At around 6 people started getting wrestless because they wanted to ride in during the day light. Finally the cops gave a little talk about what route we would follow and how it would go down. They were going to clear the highway for us so we would have it to ourselves. As we were leaving I overheard the Hustler manager say “...dammit we always lose a stripper in Jersey”

We pulled out and got on our way heading north to New York City. The road was totally cleared
for us the whole way in up to the Hard Rock Café in Times Square. Cops were blocking the entrance ramps onto the highway the whole way down. It was the greatest feeling knowing that everyone else had to wait for us. There were rows of bikes as far as you could see in either direction. On one of the ramps some guy in a truck thought he was slick by driving around the cop, but he didn’t get every far. Whe went into the city through the Lincoln Tunnel and got escorted right up to the doors of the Hard Rock. People were all lined up on the sidewalks taking pictures of us, almost as if they’ve never seen hundreds of bikers being escorted by cops before. We got to park right infront of the Café, which ruled because we didn’t have to walk anywhere.

Admittance was given only to those wearing the wristbands, noone else allowed. While I was waiting for the band to come on some old Italian guy wanted to know if he could get his picture taken with my Dad and I, I guess he never saw bikers before. We waited for what must have been atleast an hour and a half before the light went dim and the band came out. They were amazing. That’s the only way I know how to describe it. The acoustics of the small venue made it sound much better then any large arena by far. A camera was in the back recording this for an upcoming live DVD. The crowd was really into it, and the same guys who were casually talking with them earlier were now totally turned around into fanboys singing along and throwing their hands up. Waiters walked around the floor and gave out free beer to everyone. Moshing was nonexistant obviously, but it would have been cool to see this crowd go at each other. Somewhere towards the end two hot blond Hustler girls got on stage and started lezzing out, and it was the hottest thing I’ve ever seen. They closed with Take Hold Of The Flame, took a bow, and disappeared back stage. As I started putting my leather back on and zipping up my camera some drunk guy in a Zeppelin shirt comes up to me and starts mumbling to me about my patches, then after confessing how much he loved “us guys” wished us a safe ride home. Outside as I was tying the camera bag to the back of the bike some black guy in a wheelchair starts to tell all the biker that they should let him ride their bikes, his argument went something like “are you sayin I don’t know how to ride?” and then we left. The ride home was powerfully cold, not only because of it being 50 degrees out, but also cause of the 60mph wind blasting me. I got home at about 11, which is why this review is a day late. Oh yeah, and Ed Jackson was starring at me the entire day at the dealer and during the show and it creeped me the fuck out.

The only thing I was disappointed about was not getting my copy of Mindcrime autographed. I also feel bad for Steve, who missed this totally awesome once in a lifetime chance because he had to work.

Oh, and thanks to Brad for helping me figure out a few songs from the set. As far as I know this is the only place on the net where this setlist is posted. I hope my ignorance on those two songs can be forgiven.

Mmmmm. The "bitches" don't look half bad. That might be because the pictures were blurry though.

Yea I'm not sure what happened with that one. You can see all the girls in the Hustler mag or on their site tho.

Here's another pic with one of em in it.
