Megadeth -- Rama, Ontario -- July 19th, 2014

Last night Megadeth played at Casinorama in Ontario. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, so it's about a 90 minute journey for me each way. I actually didn't know it was this far at the time of buying tickets, but it was definitely worth it.

The show was scheduled to start at 9, but there was an opener who went on at 9 called Mandroid Echostar. They were pretty terrible. It was your standard djent progressive melodic metalcore pop punk awfulness. They were using at least 7 string guitars, maybe 8. They had one of the guys from Intervals filling in for them, because they needed 3 guitars in order to harmonize all of their leads and still have rhythm underneath. They played for 20 minutes, and then had a 20 minute changeover, and then Megadeth came on.

Megadeth was great. I know we harp on them a lot for the setlist (and deservedly so after you see tonight's set), but they really are great performers. I had seen them before, but this performance was far superior to last time. The sound quality was pretty good after the first song or two, and both Mustaine and Broderick were fantastic at playing those solos. It looked like Broderick may have screwed up a bit in Tornado of Souls, but I can't really blame him as that solo is impossible. The band dropped both Dawn Patrol and Poison Was The Cure. The latter I didn't care about too much, but Dawn Patrol is one of my favourite Megadeth songs, so I was a bit disappointed. Nonetheless, finally seeing Tornado of Souls live made up for it.

As you know, Dave has quite a mouth, and last night he made a comment that might get him to Blabbermouth. I'm not sure of the exact wording, but he basically said that tonight's openers were great and the band opening for him last night really sucked, and that "everybody has to start somewhere". Being the thrash nut that I am, I was well aware that last night's openers were Diamond Plate. Kinda sucks that he ragged on them, because they're a decent band, and certainly better than what we got. Hopefully someone got it on video.

My one major complaint about this show: this was an arena type show at a casino, and I was off to the side in the rafters. The problem was that everbody stood up as soon as the band kicked off into Hangar 18, but halfway through the song, most of my section sat down, even though everyone else in the place was standing, and the guy behind me got angry and told me to sit down. Why would anyone sit down for Megadeth? If you want to stay at home and listen to Billy Joel, that's fine, but don't bring that attitude to a Megadeth show. The guy even had a Slayer shirt on! I further lost respect for this individual when prior to the encore, he was shouting for "High Speed Dirt" when they hadn't even played "Holy Wars" yet, or any number of songs from "Peace Sells" that weren't going to be played. This really soured my experience, and I probably will never go to an arena show again unless I can be on the floor. It's frustrating because Megadeth was absolutely fantastic.

Setlist (source: setlist.fm)

Hangar 18
Wake Up Dead
In My Darkest Hour
Set the World Afire
Sweating Bullets
She-Wolf
Trust
A Tout Le Monde
Public Enemy No. 1
Tornado of Souls
Kingmaker
Symphony of Destruction
Peace Sells
Holy Wars... The Punishment Due

I honestly didn't recognize Set The World Afire and Trust, so I can't confirm if we got those, but the rest of the set looks right.

Wow, I actually agree with something that Dave said.

Diamond Plate was great like 4 years ago, but they just stagnated HARD. Sucks to hear MegaDave rag on them.

He didn't try to convert them to christianity, no?

Casino Rama is notorious for incredibly lame crowds. The guy who gave you shit for standing up just seemed like a metal fan who was an asshole, but a lot of tickets at that venue are given away to people who frequently gamble at the Casino.

I saw KISS there a couple of years ago, and I swear only maybe 30% of the crowd were actual fans. I even saw several old people plugging their ears and looking uncomfortable. That's my real main issue with the Judas Priest show taking place there. I'm going, and I'm sure I'll have a blast, but the awful crowds really put a damper on it.

That's true, but they're given a choice of what concerts they want to see. My buddy plays poker up there all the time and asked me if I wanted to see Megadeth for free but I already had plans so he was gonna see Journey or some shit instead.

The crowd was definitely there for Megadeth. I saw a ton of band shirts everywhere in and out of the venue itself. I did see a 70-year old slowly walk in and stay for the whole thing though.

I agree. Even if they were still great now, it would be bad for him to make those kind of comments. He's in a great spot to help people out, so I don't particularly like hearing these kind of comments from him.

That is the one problem with bands playing at Casinos. I remember talking to people on the Rush fan club website about their gig in Atlantic City a few years back and of course the high rollers of the casino were "comp'ed" tickets and these people did not belong there. I am seeing Judas Priest at the Pearl Theatre in Vegas in November so I am interested to see how many fans vs. casino goers are in attendance. It only seats 2,500 people so should not be too bad (plus I have a GA floor ticket so I don't see too many "comp'ed" fans wanting to STAND in front of the band watching them).

I have seen casino shows at the Joint in Vegas (4 Def Leppard Viva Hysteria shows) and the crowds were fans which was great.

How is the venue in Orillia? What is the capacity of the theatre/arena? I almost worked at Casino Rama after university in their accounting department but decided to come back out to Alberta instead.
