The Save Point...

In an era where "auto saving" has taken over, a lot of people have seem to have forgotten about the allmighty... SAVE POINT. Playing through a level and finally seeing it just ahead! Beating a world and getting that option to Save. You really had to fight for it instead of just "Oh, I died, I can just reload to a minute before".

Lets discuss what our most favorite save points are! Here's a list that I can think up off the top of my head that really had a meaning and really stood out...

Resident Evil - Typewriter
Donkey Kong Country - Candy Kong
GTA - Safe House
Final Fantasy - Whatever save point they used at the time... 7's is the most memorable to me, of course.
Super Mario World - Beating a Ghost House/Castle

SO MUCH RAGE! But definitely made the game stand out from the rest (i've been replaying RE1 on the DS and yes... I fucking hate that too...)

I remember how your final score would get judged by the number of saves... my friend was playing RE2, hadn't saved since practically the very beginning, got down to the sewer... and got eaten by the 'gator.... we both raged, and I still give him shit for that to this day

The save points in the later Final Fantasies are all great but only being able to save at inns in the first three was LAME. Some Final Fantasies went a little save-point-crazy (X and XIII come to mind). My favorites were the save points in XII. They always came at just the right time and were in just the right places. Plus they filled your health and magic.

I do still prefer save points to just saving wherever and whenever the hell you want. The latter does save some headaches though.

LOL! I do recall that in XIII! It seemed every 5 steps you took there was a save point

Ands yes, there really is a give and a take with each. Nothing beats getting past an insanely hard area and seeing DAT SAVE POINT. Such a great sense of fulfillment and the true feeling of advancing in the game. Auto saving/saving whenever is helpful, but save points have such a charm to them

I always liked the S boxes you had to jump on in Super Mario RPG.

The best one is probably hoping in Samus's ship in Super Metroid as it refills everything (though if you're trying to speed run you can't really use it at all).

I grew up with the Genesis, games like Sonic and Earthworm Jim took up most of my time. No saves to be found! Well Sonic 3 did but it took them until the third game in the series.

Edit: Though I don't recall a particular save point, my favorite saving system in a game was probably Resident Evil 4's type writer thing as well, I really liked that. Kept you in the atmosphere of the game, and the music was chilling.

Double Edit: Actually I'd probably have to go with the old Pokemon games, always saving before a Gym Leader or the Elite Four. Saving in the Safari Zone the first time I played through help me get that damn surf Tm as well.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the OLD NES save systems (namely the original Mega Man series)... you know.... with the Passwords that were 12 characters long that you had to write down

Barf! There were some that were way worse. Check out some of the Angry Video Game Nerds videos for those. But some were twenty characters, upper and lower case.

Playing through the first Bioshock again, the Vita Chamber save system is flawless.
