Sargeist -- Austin, TX -- July 2nd, 2014

Sargeist (maybe missing a song)
Satanic Black Devotion
Echoes from a Morbid Night
Feeding the Crawling Shadows
Empire of Suffering
Black Fucking Murder
Reaping with Curses and Plague
The Shunned Angel
Returning to Misery and Comfort

This was the second night of Finnish black metal in Austin with Behexen headlining the previous and Sargeist taking top billing at this show. I arrived to Red 7 a little after 10 and San Antonio band Sturmgewehr were just getting started. They play pretty straightforward 2nd wave-style black metal but no theatrics or costumes, just 3 dudes and a lady in metal shirts and jeans. Unfortunately they were having some instrument and feedback problems and when a black metal band has to stop completely to fix something it really kills any momentum they’re able to build. Sturmgewehr got the crowd moving a bit when they pulled out a sloppy cover of Doom’s ‘Police Bastard’, which was an interesting choice but it seems that crusty d-beat and black metal go hand in hand.

The second band Ritual Decay had the look of a war metal band; bullet belts, bandoliers, chains, a pile of skulls; but their brand of black metal wasn’t just non-stop blasting. They had good interlude parts and sections where they slowed things to a death/doom crawl before launching back into hellfire speed. It made for a very entertaining opening act since I didn’t have any specific expectation about Ritual Decay before the show. I’m glad these guys were able to make it on this bill all the way from Memphis, TN and I’m sure they were stoked to open for Sargeist.

The show ran very smoothly and a few minutes after midnight Sargeist entered the stage donning corpse paint. However, juxtaposing Behexen rituals the night before, Sargeist had no candles, incense or even intro music. They just walked on stage and tore straight into ‘Satanic Black Devotion’. Maybe it was my position in the room, but I felt Sargeist had the best sound of the 6 bands over the two nights. Even though Behexen and Sargeist share three members and play black metal, the two bands are able to create different atmospheres. Behexen’s performance was almost hypnotic while Sargeist was pure savagery from start to finish. The songs in the middle of their set, ‘Empire of Suffering’ and ‘Black Fucking Murder’, were the highlights. I think there were less people at this show than the previous night, but the fact that these bands weren’t able to fill Red 7’s inside stage just shows how weak Austin’s black metal fanbase is.

If you’re in one of the remaining cities on this trek I would highly recommend taking the opportunity to see some of Finland’s finest in their rare appearances in the US. I’d love to see some of these guys back on US soil with Horna next time.

So jealous. One of the bands near the top of my "Must See" list.

The amount of people there would've made you shake your head. I'd be surprised if it was more than half capacity.

Yep. And last night was probably my last time there while living in Austin.

Ha ha. So Austin hasn't changed much. That was my experience attending shows there from 1989 - 1993. San Antonio was a whole different story.

Bigger metal shows do ok. But underground or black metal bands, not so much.

It's not surprising the turnout in Austin wasn't impressive, but I hope the LA date does well. There's no doubt that the reason the US lacks black metal shows is due to poor support for the genre though.
