Behexen -- Austin, TX -- July 1st, 2014

Under the Eye of the Lord
Sota valon jumalaa vastaan
Temple of the Silent Curses
By the Blessing of Satan
Mouth of Leviathan
Celebration of Christís Fall
My Soul for His Glory
Deathís Black Light

Austin was lucky enough to be one of the few US cities to be graced (or damned?!) by the presence of Finnish black metal acts Behexen and Sargeist on their brief stint of shows following the Martyrdoom festival in New York. This first of two nights would see Behexen headlining with Mexican war metallers Morbosidad as direct support and San Antonio black death band Hod in the opening slot. Doors opened at 9 and when I arrived to Red 7 about 9:30 there was already a small horde of fans swarming the merch area. Behexen and Sargeist had merch for their bands, plus also some leftover merch from fellow Martyrdoom performers One Tail, One Head and a Mournful Congregation patch. Morbosidad had a shirt and some vinyl and of course there was a table of bootleg shirts from South of the border.

Hod started promptly at 10 and when they began the room was about a quarter full, but as they played on more and more black t-shirts made their way in. With these Austin dates being the only Texas shows for Behexen and Sargeist people obviously were in from Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Point being, there were many in attendance very familiar with Hodís material. The same went for Mexicoís bullet-belted and spike-clad Morbosidad. I think the room may have actually reached peak attendance during their set. I donít know enough Spanish to tell you anything about the stage banter or what the crowd was yelling, but their performance was vicious enough to turn the pit into a battlefield. As always with Morbosidad, by then end of their set the floor was scattered with burnt bible pages and ringing ears a plenty.

Shortly after midnight Behexen walked onto the stage with all members, except for drummer Horns, wearing hooded robes. The guitar and bass wielding members also had a ninja-like cloth across their faces leaving only their eyes exposed. With a small altar placed in from of the drum kit vocalist Hoath Torog faced the altar with his back to the audience, his band mates circling around the altar. He lit some incense and candles before opening a book and reading some verses into the microphone and then offering a chalice to each band member that they drank from before taking their places and launching into a entrancing set of ritualistic black metal. It took a couple songs for the sound guy to get the levels to a good place, but once things were zeroed in everything clicked and the band sounded great. The rabid fans went wild for cuts like By The Blessing of Satan and Celebration of Christís Fall. By the time Behexenís set wound down the crowd had thinned, but many stayed to the bitter end. Closing with the ripping track Deathís Black Light ensured everyone will be hungry for more black metal on night two with Sargeist headlining.
