It gets really boring at work when there is nothing to do . My co-worker was making a huge deal out of the soap we use... so I figured it was worth a Metal Setlists poll

I think this is an excellent topic for discussion. All the soft drink stuff was pretty lame, but discussing soap presents some opportunities for us to get our hands dirty.

Personally, I purchase handmade hippy soap from one of my cousins, in bar form, and I've been meaning to ask her a few things about the soap making process. If any of you make your own bar soap like a hippy (calling DethMaiden), maybe you can answer these questions for me:

1. What types of natural preservatives do you use to protect soaps?

2. How do you go about mixing the sodium hydroxide with the water when making large batches of soap? In a bucket?

3. When must soaps be cut?

4. How do you go about coloring the soap? I'm assuming pigments are used, but what kinds of pigments and what if they don't dissolve? And what colorants are considered 'natural'?

5. What's the shelf life of handmade bar soap and what besides temperature could cause color bleeding? (I'm assuming exposure to high heat can cause bleeding).
