A PSA

Im pretty sure I may have been exposed to asbestos last night. I'm not looking for sympathy. I was aware of it and I willingly still did my work around it. I have no one to blame but myself. Now I'm pretty much freaked out and scaring myself, which is one of the worst things you can do. It can take fifty years to develop into anything bad and I'd be well in to my eighties by that point. But I'm in for a rough few days until I can somehow get over it.

So I just want to tell anyone reading this that if you are aware of asbestos (or anything else harmful for that matter) in your work and are asked to work around it anyway, tell whoever asked you to go fuck themselves. I wish I did. You have an option and life will go on if you say "no". You'll get another job, whatever. But you won't live with a weight on your chest like this.

Sorry to hear man.

When my parents renovated their newly purchased 1925 built home in 1994, in the basement there was an amazing amount of asbestos insulation and old cast iron radiators. We had a couple guys come in and remove it all, for some inexplicable reason my dad didn't care about being around it a little with little protection. But as soon as I opened the door to tell them something or whatever I got yelled at...I'm pretty sure I sucked a little down. My dad was 46 at the time so he didn't care since it would take so long to develop, but me...hmm I dunno.

You never saw so many asbestos removal bags in your life and all I remember is the color white.

Asbestos exposure becomes a health concern when high concentrations of asbestos fibers are inhaled over a long time period. People who become ill from asbestos are almost always those who are exposed on a day-to-day basis in a job where they work directly with the material. As a person's exposure to fibers increases, either by breathing more fibers or by breathing fibers for a longer time, that person's risk of disease also increases. Disease is very unlikely to result from a single, high-level exposure, or from a short period of exposure to lower levels.

A very serious suggestion if I may. Jot down your entire detailed experience here or somewhere else with a date stamp. This way when medical treatment is hopefully more advanced in 30-40 years to treat this better, you can take your diary of the events and bring it to a good mesothelioma lawyer you always see on TV. This may sound ridiculous but you never ever ever know.

Most important and relevant part, I would have thought?

I jacked that paragraph from the US Department of Health I should mention, so whether to believe the government or not is another story. Just supplying the info!

It did read like something official, so I'd assumed you'd grabbed it from somewhere.

Maybe Indestructible can confirm if it's to be believed

Honestly, without meaning to belittle your fears, if it were that deadly in that small a quantity, it would still be in the news. Little old ladies dying on the spot because they had some in the basement they haven't been down to for 30 years, etc.

I expect therefore the above statement Maideneer quoted is probably right, because you basically don't hear about asbestos poisoning anymore. Everything I've ever heard/read on the subject always refers to "prolonged" exposure.

We had some asbestos removed from our house (which was built in the '30s) before we moved in. Fun stuff.

My aunt and uncle lived in a house that had terrible asbestos and mold and everything under the sun, they were sick a lot, they moved out and have been doing amazingly since.

Look at it from a super pesismist point of view...... according to studies and doctors, what isn't dangerous for us in this day and age!?

I am positive you will be all good mang and need not to worry at all, espeically if it was just one encouter.

Yeah, I went to my doctor today for another issue and he said that while it isn't good, smoking and driving are more dangerous.

And I suffer from "cluster migraines". DETROIT WHAT, DETROIT WHAT!
