Nile -- Toronto, Ontario -- April 24th, 2014

Nile
Support: Panzerfaust, Fragile Existence & Necrodios
Date: Thursday April 24th, 2014
Venue: the Opera House in Toronto, Ontario
T-Shirt Worn: Suffocation ‘Breeding the Spawn’

Three local openers didn't interest me too much. I got there just in time for Panzerfaust. I think I've seen them before but their singer has adopted a mask and stage presence not unlike the Curator from Portal. The mask is actually really cool. It reminded me of Scarecrow from Batman. And when it's on a hulking frontman who's around six foot five and two hundred and seventy five pounds it makes for a pretty imposing visual. But the whole masked frontman thing isn't too original these days. Musically they were okay. The best way to describe them is “wall-of-noise black metal”.

I’ve been waiting years to see Nile live. I don’t know the story but for whatever reason they’ve never been allowed in Canada, or at least not for the last ten years. So this show was a long time coming for a lot of people. I was surprised there weren’t more people there. There were still a lot of people but the place wasn’t quite as packed as I’ve seen the Opera House. But Nile has sort of faded from the spotlight the last few years. If this show had of happened in 2007 I’d imagine people would’ve been hanging off the ceiling.

The band sounded INCREDIBLE. Like, note-for-note, beat-for-beat perfect. And the mix was incredible too. I think it was the best sounding show I’ve been to at the Opera House. I felt really bad for their bass player. There were a few times he looked like he was in pain trying to keep up. And his vocals really weren’t that great. But Karl and Dallas were spot on perfect and effortless. All I can say is “wow”. And George. Holy fuck, that guy is a machine behind the kit. Just incredible. That’s all I can say about this show is how incredible they are live. The song selection was a good mix. I’d prefer more from the first two albums but at this stage with so much to choose from what they played was still good. I was surprised they only played one song off Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka. The highlight was the chanting section at the end of Defiling the Gates of Ishtar (that was insane) and Unas, Slayer of the Gods in general. And Black Seeds of Vengence. This was just an awesome performance all around. I won’t call this one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to (because I wasn’t one hundred percent happy with what they played, I wanted Masturbating the War God, Smashing the Antiu or Barra Edinazzu) but from a performance standpoint Nile are probably one of (if not THE) best live band I’ve ever seen.

Nile
1. Sacrifice Unto Sebek
2. Defiling the Gates of Ishtar
3. Chapter For Transforming Into a Snake
4. Kafir
5. Hittite Dung Incantation
6. Enduring The Eternal Molestation Of Flame
7. Supreme Humanism Of Megalomania
8. As He Creates, So He Destroys
9. The Blessed Dead
10. The Howling of the Jinn
11. The Inevitable Degradation Of Flesh
12. Iskander Dhul Karnon
13. Sarcophagus
14. Lashed to the Slave Stick
15. Unas, Slayer of the Gods
16. Black Seeds of Vengence

Amazing show tonight! I've heard several times that Nile's live sound is pretty muddy, but that simply wasn't the case tonight. The setlist was unreal, and the band really seemed grateful to finally be in Canada.

Picked up the Pyramid tour shirt, and a flag

The Opera Houses' capacity is eight hundred and seventy, I'd say at least six hundred and fifty. But I was down by the pit. I didn't look backwards.

Well I'm a terrible judge of things like that. The place is either "packed", "pretty full" or "empty" to me. This one was " pretty full".

That includes the balcony too, which is closed off for most shows I go to. Was it open for this show?
