Volbeat -- Modesto, CA -- April 8th, 2014

Wow, amazing show. My first time seeing a full headlining set from Volbeat. Previously saw them opening for Metallica on the Death Magnetic arena tour and then last summer at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento.

Interesting choice of venue for a northern CA show. I'm from Sacramento and haven't been to Modesto in probably 20 years. Drive down was easy and the venue was easy to find, right off of highway 99. The Modesto Center Plaza is basically a big room that looks like it normally hosts proms, weddings, etc. But it ended up working. Huge turnout. Amazing how Volbeat has turned into such a big band.

Couple of highlights:
- Phil Demmel from Machine Head jamming on Pool of Booze Booze Booza
- Michael Poulsen crowd surfing to the middle of the floor to give a t shirt to a young fan (while the rest of the band jams on I Am the Law by Anthrax)
- Hearing a snippet of a new song (heavy!)
- And of course, just getting a full headlining set.

Digital Summer and Trivium opened. Both were great, though I do not have their setlists.

Doc Holliday - great opener
Radio Girl - first time hearing this live
Hallelujah Goat
Lola Montez - chicks went crazy for this one
Boa [JDM]
Sad Man's Tongue - Johnny Cash song, goes over great live
Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood
Dead but Rising
16 Dollars
Maybellene I Hofteholder
Heaven nor Hell -- they didn't play the last verse/chorus, weird
A Broken Man and the Dawn / Mary Ann's Place / Making Believe - great medley
(New Song Snippet)
The Nameless One
We
Still Counting
Encore:
Pool of Booze, Booze, Booza
(with Phil Demmel)
The Hangman's Body Count
The Mirror and the Ripper
The Human Instrument / A Warrior's Call

Go see them on this tour!

Their popularity has definitely spiked in recent months. They were here only 7 months ago on the Rock Allegiance tour, which actually got bumped down from the Tsongas Center to the Lowell Auditorium.

Here we are on this tour now, and they sold out the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in a week, a 2,200 capacity venue. And tickets on StubHub are going for $180.

Glad you had a good time though.

Sorry, still don't understand why this has become a big band.

Before the hate posts overtake this

They are pretty spectacular live. Curious how the new song will sound.

This. It's the vocals that people love.

I'd still like to see them someday but won't pay their stupid high cost.

What are they asking in your town?

$41 here ($32 at the box office). I think that's pretty damn reasonable for a tour with two well established bands.

Exactly. I paid $32. It was all general admission.

Lot more reasonable than trying to buy a Crue/Cooper or Kiss/Def Lep ticket.

Volbeat and Trivium, two great bands for a great price.

Good tune, but not a Johnny Cash song. They just dedicate it to him a lot.

Actually if you tell them you love that Johnny Cash cover they do, they get very smug and pissed off about it. My roommate/cameraman can back me up on that one.
