Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy -- Toronto, Ontario -- December 6th, 2014

Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy
Date: Saturday December 6th, 2014
Venue: the Sony Center in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: Darkthrone ‘Transylvanian Hunger’

Anyone who's read any of the shit that I've vomited forth on this forum will know that I am a huge Final Fantasy fanboy. Not just the games and the sexxx-appeal but the music too. So when I saw tickets go on sale for this back in March I didn’t even have to think about buying tickets. I saw it two years ago and it was one of the best concerts I’ve seen in my life and I’ll see it any chance I can get.

For those that don’t know this is organized by some guy named Arnie Roth with the blessing of Square-Enix (the developers of Final Fantasy) to perform orchestral renditions of the games music all over the globe.

Seeing a Final Fantasy concert is like seeing a band that have released forty albums in their career. There’s no chance in hell that you’re going to hear everything you want. I liked that the set was almost entirely different from the last time I saw this. The only stuff I remember them playing the last time were the Prelude (which is a given no matter what), Liberi Fatali, To Zanarkand, the Chocobo Medley, Clash on the Big Bridge and One-Winged Angel. So that was awesome. But new stuff they did play was a little more low-key than the first time I saw them. They were really focusing on the older games too, which was weird. I could’ve done without anything from I, II, III or V and more from oh I don’t know: Final Fantasy XII! The videos were better and worse than the last time. Better because there were more and they were edited better. Worse because every video was the same with the female lead and her sadness and turmoil (awww, so many slow face shots). And because since they focused a lot on more of the older games they looked like crap, because a lot of it hasn’t been transferred into anything better than 16-bit. But I must have been loving it because the two hours flew by. My favorites this time around were Melodies of Life (only because I recently became reattached to that game) the parts of Light Eternal where they played parts of the battle theme from Final Fantasy XIII and (above all) the Hymn of the Fayth. That is one of my favorite Final Fantasy tracks and I DID NOT expect them to do one. When the male choir started it off it was pretty cool but when the female section came in it was incredible! If I’d change one thing from tonight’s show it’s that the conductor Arnie Roth yammers on too much between songs. And he was talking less this time than the last! He has a bad habit too of announcing songs before they play them. So he’d announce that they were playing songs “A”, “B” and “C” and the crowd was so excited to hear “C” that “A” and “B” had nary a crap giveth.

If you’re a fan of the series you should check this out. I know I will again.

Thats so awesome, I really hope I am able to catch this some time. I don't care what songs they play, it'd just be rad to see this!

It was awesome. The Hymn of the Fayth was so awesome. Only complaint was too much stuff from the older games. When have you ever heard someone complain after a concert that they didn't play enough new stuff?

They don't play too often so if you get the chance don't pass it up.

They're slowly doing more and more UK dates each time they come over, so hoping for an Irish date in the next couple of years. Seeing 'To Zanarkand' will destroy me emotionally, its probably my favorite piece of music ever!
