Anvil -- Albany, NY -- March 28th, 2014

This was Anvil's first stop on their " longest tour in 38 years! ".

I was anticipating about 25 people. Albany is fickle with some bands. Anvil had last played in Albany in 1985. I kept my eye out for a vintage shirt from that tour date.

The show was at Bogie's. The more I go there the more I like it. For the most part the sound is pretty good, if you find the right spot.

I missed the first band. According to my friend they sucked.

The next two bands sounded quite similar. They weren't bad, but they didn't have anything special or interesting.

The band before Anvil was a Dio tribute called Evil Or Divine. My initial thought was it's nice to have a band play classic material before Anvil. I feel tribute bands should be able to nail every note and make very few mistakes. Besides the fact that the band rehearses the material, they have been listening to the music for many years.

Mob Rules
Holy Diver
Heaven and Hell
Man On The Silver Mountain
Rainbow In The Dark
Last In Line

The band needs to practice more, get a new guitar player and singer, and don't play the cliched Dio songs. Playing Rainbow In The Dark without a keyboard was strange. Not much of a warm up.

Anvil is Anvil. They play music from their three first albums, I don't count Backwaxed, and the three latest albums. I wish they indulged their catalog more. They could really wow some people with at least one song from another album.

I don't want to cast a shadow. I thought they were great! They sounded good and looked like they were having a great time.

March of The Crabs
666
School Love
Winged Assassins
Bad Ass Rock and Roll
Mothra
This is Thirteen
Swing Thing
Thumb Hang
Hope In Hell
Eat Your Words
Metal on Metal

Encore-

Running

They played about 75 minutes. I really liked that they ended with Running. I love Metal on Metal, but ending with it all the time gets old.

I am not a fan of their merch. They had a T-shirt bundle with This is Thirteen for $25. Other shirts were $25, posters $20, drumsticks $20, and used guitar strings for $20. I wish they didn't let 4th graders design their merch.

I am glad I went to the show. Lips and the bass player were hanging out with fans and they were very engaging. Good time!!

This is my only problem with them. I think it's fine for touring North America, since they don't tour too often, but even at hometown shows, their sets are always the same.

So how many people did show up?

The show in Providence last night was described by Robb Reiner as being "soooo up close and intimate". So, empty.

There was around 100-125. Very intimate show.

This is my sixth time seeing them. The first time headlining. I get frustrated with their set choice also.

I thought I missed a song, and I did. I fixed it.

I contemplated going to PVD last night, but I found out that the show was scheduled from 5 to 9. If that was true, that means Anvil probably went on around 730-745ish. Between closing up after an 11 hour day at work, driving the rush hour hell ride down the expressway and searching for parking in an unfamiliar area, I decided to pass. Now it's a toss up on May 18th. Anvil in Allston or Paganfest in Woostah.

That's for sure. So inconsistent. Mike books some great shows, and some have absolutely awful attendance. Really is a shame. Example, 2 years ago Bogie's was filled to the gills for Biohazard on a Sunday night, but Dying Fetus on a Friday night got like 75 people.
