Metallica post demo of "Lords of Summer"

Here it is in all its demo glory

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiOtev3rEKI

First impressions: It's ok, it is a demo after all and not the finished product so I have to factor that in; but really meh like a song that didn't make the cut for DM. I feel like the underwhelming mix is part of it, it lacks punch. I will say James voice is pretty good, and Kirk's solo isn't bad.

Metallica Talk Epic New Song 'The Lords of Summer'

Quote:
But while the song sounds fully crafted, Ulrich says things change. "We did the same thing when we went out and played a bunch of dates in 2006," he says. "We were writing and played two different new songs over the course of that summer, and none of them made the record [Death Magnetic]. One was called 'New Song 1' going out on a creative limb, here and the other was called 'New Song 2.' That's how deep we went. There was a couple of pieces in 'New Song 1,' some of the middle bit ended up in 'All Nightmare Long,' and the intro bit ended up in 'The End of the Line.' That's how we work; stuff just gets changed around, moved over and this goes over there and the rest of that gets sacked and that ends up in the intro in song five." [Laughs]
so i guess there is a chance this will be drastically different by the time it gets recorded

I gotta say, I really don't like the demo much when compared to the live version. James does sound good, but it's like he's forcing melodic parts where they shouldn't exist during the double bass bits. The energy level just seems a bit lower on this demo compared to what we heard live.

Ironically, if there's a major-label engineer that could stick them in a room and have them play live, hit record and capture them well, it is Greg Fidelman. Sucks that his mixes are so lame though.

This is still such an average song. It's like they bought themselves an Early Metallica For Dummies guitar book and made a song from the bits they learned.

It's a decent song, I don't think Metallica is the band anymore if you wanna hear something mindblowing (unless like St. Anger or Lulu, mindblowingly bad)

If it is at least listenable, that should be noteworthy at this point in the game.

I'm digging it. People still expect them to write another RTL or MOP it seems. Not going to happen.

I don't think anyone realistically expects that from Metallica at this point. Like 60 - 75 percent of Death Magnetic was fucking great, I just want them to improve on that formula, but unfortunately this song doesn't sound like that.
