Metal Church -- Rochester, NY -- March 2nd, 2014

Drove down to the old Montage on a frigid and righteous Sunday night to see some Metal Church. The venue was probably 85% full and can hold 350-400 max so it was good seeing the turnout of metal heads, even though this is probably one of the smaller venues of the tour. I did not care for any of the openers, including Martyred and the locals. Metal Church themselves put on a very solid and enjoyable performance overall, but it was plagued with some technical difficulties. Kurdt Vanderhoof's guitar monitors and amps were both blown/malfunctioning for a majority of the set and a few times he was openly arguing with the sound guy about it right on stage. The sound was good but it could have been a little better. The band still did seem to enjoy themselves, with Ronnie stealing people's hats and wearing them onstage and even stage diving a few times. As far as the set goes they ended up cutting Highway Star from the encore and one guy started screaming "WE GOT ROBBED!!!!" over and over again. That's just how it goes sometimes, though. All in all it was another great night of metal at the Montage and I'd definitely go see Metal Church again. On to the next!

Does that venue always add a ton of openers to each show? I saw Katatonia there a few years ago and I think there were 5 opening bands.

Yeah they're notorious for throwing a bunch of local bands onto shows. The shows there usually run late because of this. I remember at Killfest 2010 there were a lot of bands on that tour already and with all the local bands they added Overkill didn't finish until 1:45. It gets old sometimes but it's a small gripe as there aren't many venues left around here within a reasonable drive that book the kind of shows they do.

Shit yeah. In Mourning, Date With Poverty, In Due Time, and In Harm's Way would all rule. The Human Factor is an unheralded masterpiece.

About an hour and a half or so. They went on a few minutes before 11:00 and played until about 12:30

Great show !!! It was my third Metal Church show (all with Ronny Munroe on vocals). Basically at this point the current version of the band is a cover band (only Kurt Vanderhoof remains from the 80's)...I'm not knocking them...a great cover band !!! There was a very good crowd for the show...alot of us old 80's people (one guy actually brought his kid with him who was sitting there playing his video game during the show . Nothing against the newer material (Generation Nothing fit perfectly into the beginning of the set), but most people come out to see the 80's classics which they play great. They keep it safe and play the standard 'hits' ! I have a live cd with 1986 concert dates and its almost a repeat of the set...Ton of Bricks, Start the fire, Gods of wrath, Watch the Children Pray, Beyond the Black, Metal Church. Ya, the sound was off at times...but for being played in a small club you cant complain...great show !!!
