pretty simple, they consistently put out great music, consistently kill live (not to mention almost all of their sets are unique), constantly tour and play everywhere (though never oversaturate anywhere), never really compromise, and the result is naturally growing their audience largely by word of mouth.

i saw a similar thing happen in maine to what you said. i saw them draw maybe 300 people to a shitty pool hall in 2007. a couple years later they sell out a 600 cap club. and then another couple years after that they pull 1200 to our big theatre. and really nothing happened in that 4-5 years aside from them just staying awesome.

They go away to record Earth Rocker, amidst their usual bits of US touring, and by the time they come back, during which time nothing's happened Clutch-wise in Europe and the new album isn't even out yet, they sell out a 1000 capacity venue in London, with several other UK dates on the schedule, where last time they were here they couldn't sell 800 when only playing one other show nationwide.

As soon as that tour is over they book another one, this time the London show is a 2,000 capacity theatre, and sell that out too.

They're coming back in April/May, playing 1500-2000 capacity places all over the UK and headlining a festival with Neurosis. Honestly, I can't say I get it. It's not like they've even gotten better over the last few years.
Alot of that just doesn't really make sense. It really seems like after Earth Rocker came out that just moved Clutch to a different stratosphere. Before their albums sold good (not great) and they drew pretty good (again not great) and now they are drawing and selling better than they ever have in their career, and yet they are having all kinds of success w/o me ever hearing the word sellout. They are doing everything their way and are having the best success in their career. I couldn't be happier and find a more deserving band.

While the attendance for Neurosis seems somewhat small, I think a huge number of people got in for free through either the guestlist or just by being friends with the band and walking in. Last year for the New Years show they put a few hundred people in the Oakland Metro, all of whom were friends of the band.

What these numbers also don't reveal is the metric fuckton of money that was made at the bar. Using the Regency Neurosis show as an example again, they were charging $8 for a 12 oz cup of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. A bottle of that costs like a little more than a buck a pop at the grocery store, and it's probably even cheaper when the venues buys it in bulk. Beer was flowing like water at the show, the venue probably made a killing even if they only sold half capacity's worth of tickets.

Plus merch that the bands sell so I'm sure most of these bands aren't doing too bad off.

That's Mushroomhead on the coast. In the Midwest multiply that by 4, or 5
