When I first heard their new album, I described it as the synth soundtrack to a b-movie that Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffs on

If you want to check out an interesting experimental electronic album, check out the new Surachai: http://surachai.bandcamp.com/album/ritual

Short pieces that are more ideas than songs, I liken it to NIN's Ghosts or a darker and more minimal Aphex Twin.

But is it my thing? Not really. Just being honest.

Yeah, apparently Alcest just isn't my cup of tea. Oh well. C'est la vie.

But, look at the bright side - at least we still have...about 3,847,698,346,546,398 other interests in common.

Yeah, I think so too. I just tend to gravitate towards self-deprecation sometimes even though I don't really mean to. Maybe it's a lame subconscious attempt at humility.

(Oops. I did it again, didn't I?)

True.

So have you heard any other good post-rock albums this year besides Moonlit Sailor?

It's a bummer, I very rarely delve into really long and dynamic records these days for a couple reasons:

1) I never have more than maybe 20-25 minutes to listen to music at any given time and when I do I'm either driving to/from work or walking to/from class. When I'm able to devote more time to music, which is usually when I hit the gym for an hour or two, it's loud as hell and I'm listening on shitty earbuds, which leads me to my next point.

2) My broke ass can't afford good speakers/monitors. I've had to listen to music on crappy earbuds for the last year, and I just can't listen to those things for more than 30 minutes to an hour at a time, and when I do it's often in a really noisy environment. I've tried listening to bands like Alcest or GY!BE in those environments with my shitty cotton buds, but it just gets lost in a wash and I'm not really focusing on the music. When I do get a chance to really dive in to a record, it's when I go on long drives and I can just listen to an album in the car start to finish. The new Agalloch and Swans albums really clicked for me the last couple of times that I listened to them while driving from LA to the bay, but barring Earth Diver by Cormorant, I can't remember the last time I was able to really get to know an album with really dense and long songs. I think I listened to the Thou album maybe a grand total of 1 and a half times just because I didn't have the time to devote to it.

I've basically just been listening to a ton of death metal, NWOBHM, hard rock, classic metal and the more old school black metal just because the songs are shorter, to the point and require less attention to enjoy from me. It sucks because I know once I get an okay listening setup again (meaning good system + no roommates) then I'll be playing catch up with so much good music.
