Green Jelly -- Austin, TX -- October 2nd, 2013

This was a definite last minute show for me; I didn't find out about it until maybe...two days before it happened. Normally, last minute shows are a no-go for me since they get rather pricey, but since the tickets were only $8, I decided to go anyway.

I arrived at the venue around twenty minutes before the doors opened and managed to strike up a conversation with the manager about getting a gig booked with my band for a first show. An uneventful few minutes later, and I was watching the first band, a proggy instrumental band. I thought they were good, but honestly, once you hear one instrumental band that has an obvious Tool/Dream Theater influence, you've heard a lot of them. The next few bands ranged from alright to really good at times, however one of them going by the name of Shitty Advice performed on a very high note, and definitely deserved a better reaction than a few golf claps and two drunk guys slamming for their show. After that, I went outside to smoke a cigarette, but wound up meeting Green Jelly and shooting the shit with them while they put their puppets to the side for later. A little bit of time passed between that and the time Octopus Rex went on; I went inside to catch their show for a bit and highly enjoyed their cover of "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" and the dancers onstage, but after that, I went back outside to talk to a guy I met at Black Flag a few months ago and missed the rest of their set...

And speaking of Black Flag, much like the last time I hit up Infest, the coheadlining band (Monkeysoop) consisted of the headliners with a different lead singer, however unlike Good For You, Monkeysoop managed to be entertaining through the entire show. They gave it their all at all times, especially during their version of Happy Happy Joy Joy, and toward the end of their set, they invited audience members to sing a song with them, myself included.

Pure Hate
Chicken Damnit
Little Pink Dots

Finally, Green Jelly began to set up their stuff before they began with a hammy, yet hilarious introduction lasting some five minutes while they hauled out a cooler and two huge pizzas to give free Lone Star beers and pepperoni/cheese pizza slices to people in the audience who were fast enough or barked like seals hard enough for their slice. After that, yet before starting the show, Bill went on to invite ten audience members to be the puppets for the night. Yours truly got the Tom Morello role along with a two minute spotlight while Bill kept shouting that I had ruined RATM, Audioslave, and Soundgarden while cracking "fat Tom Morello" jokes, such as "Rage Against the Snack Machine", "Fuck You, I Won't Go On a Diet", and asking if I had eaten the rest of the band while slapping my chest. I gotta admit, I was probably laughing harder than anyone else during those two minutes.

Anyway, after that, the rest of the show went on rather swimmingly from what I could tell. At various points in time, we were made to slam onstage, get involved in the pit down in the audience, invite more audience members onstage (a good 3/4ths of the crowd was onstage at one point) and sit onstage while Bill narrated stories for us all to hear. The band let the air out of themselves with their version of the Three Little Pigs before getting offstage and signing posters, chatting to fans, and just having a really chill time with everyone that stuck around, and when I revealed to them that I was planning on writing this review, a couple of them actually asked me to write down the name of the website so they could check it out later (so if by any chance they're reading this, great show guys!).

I can't wait to see Green Jelly again. That was just an amazing show...

Why such a short set from Green Jelly? Didn't they headline?

That is a very short set. I saw them in 2008 and they played probably twenty songs and were actually going to do more but the club cut them off.

They do put on a good show.

Probably curfew, since I've been noticing lots of shows ending at midnight instead of 2:00 in the morning now.

It didn't feel like a short set, maybe about an hour or so, counting the interaction with the crowd...but maybe I'm not so reliable about that, considering that a few minutes felt like an hour under the hot-ass stage lights in a duct tape, papier-mache and sofa foam punk rock puppet.
