The Recorded History of: the Melvins

I have a love/hate relationship with the Melvins. I do consider them one of my favorite bands. They’ve released a ton of stuff over the years and a lot of it (the post-2000 stuff especially) I really don’t enjoy. But, anything they released in the 1990’s was some of the best music I’ve heard in my life. If their career was entirely made up of music that good they would, without a doubt, be my favorite band. But they released a lot of shit I don’t like. And quite a bit of stuff I’ve never bothered with since I know I wouldn’t like it (again, most post-2000 stuff). But the good stuff is so damn good. That’s why I’m doing this. So this is going to be a different history lesson than my Napalm Death thread because I won’t hold back on anything I didn’t like. I think I’ll even give the albums scores this time around.

So I got into the Melvin's around 1998. I'd known about them since the mid-1990's but never paid them much attention. My friend in college was getting into them and he bought Hodini and Honky and we thought both were awesome. I sort of forgot about them until early 2001 when I was unemployed. I wasted my days on Napster and started downloading all their albums. And I couldn't believe that every album I downloaded was better than the last. I was able to get everything they had out before Napster closed down. But I felt guilty "stealing" all this music from such a great band, so I went out and purchased it all legally. I'm going to include all the "main" releases but there are too many split seven inches and singles out there for me to keep track of.

Six Songs
Released on March 11th, 1986
Label: C/Z Records

Line-up:
Buzz Osborne – guitar, vocals
Matt Lukin – bass, vocals
Dale Crover – drums

1. Easy As It Was
2. Now a Limo
3. Grinding Process
4. At a Crawl
5. Disinvite
6. Snake Appeal

The Melvins debut EP/album came out over the years in various incarnations. But whatever versions you’ve heard it was all recorded at the same time. Just with a different amount of songs. So why bother with this version when you can get a later version with more stuff?
Best Song: Snake Appeal
Rating: 2 out of 5

Gluey Porch Treatments
Released sometime in 1987
Label: Alchemy

Line-up:
Buzz Osborne – guitar, vocals
Matt Lukin – bass, vocals
Dale Crover – drums

1. Eye Flys
2. Echo Head/Don’t Piece Me
3. Heater Moves and Eyes
4. Steve Instant Newman
5. Influence of Atmosphere
6. Exact Paperbacks
7. Happy Grey or Black
8. Leeech
9. Glow God
10. Big As a Mountain
11. Heaviness of the Load
12. Flex With You
13. Bitten into Sympathy
14. Gluey Porch Treatments
15. Clipping Roses
16. As It Was
17. Over from Under the Excretment

The Melvins first proper album and regarded as their proper “debut” album. Truth be told I don’t like this album. It’s just too sludgy and tortured sounding. And the songs are all the same. Nothing really sticks after it’s over. It lacks of the character of the later stuff but it’s still worth a listen to just to say you heard it.

Ozma
Released on June 1, 1991
Label: Boner

Line-up:
Buzz – vocals, guitar
Dale – drums, backing vocals
Lori – bass

1. Vile
2. Oven
3. At a Crawl
4. Let God Be Your Gardener
5. Creepy Smell
6. Kool Legged
7. Green Honey
8. Agonizer
9. Raise a Paw
10. Love Thing (KISS cover)
11. Ever Since My Accident
12. Revulsion/We Reach
13. Dead Dressed
14. Cranky Messiah
15. Claude
16. My Small Percent Shows Most
17. Candy-O (CD bonus track)

Another difficult album for me to listen to. It’s just not as fun as their later albums. But there are some better songs on here compared to Gluey Porch Treatments. If you feel the need to get this look for the early 1990’s CD versions, it has the entire Gluey Porch Treatments album tacked on to it.

Ten Songs
Released sometime in 1991
Label: ?

Line-up:
Buzz Osborne – guitar, vocals
Matt Lukin – bass, vocals
Dale Crover – drums

1. Easy As It Was
2. Now a Limo
3. Grinding Process
4. #2 Pencil
5. At a Crawl
6. Disinvite
7. Snake Appeal
8. Show Off Your Red Hands
9. Over From Underground
10. Cray Fish

This is the version of their debut EP/album I’ve heard and it’s the best of their earlier stuff I’ve ever heard. I don’t know what it is, maybe because it’s more compact, maybe the songs are just better. Whatever, I’d recommend this version of the “______ Songs” releases over all the others. That said, it's still not something I particularly like.
Best Song: Snake Appeal

This is awesome! I've always wanted to get more into the Melvins' (huge) catalogue.

Well, you're in luck.

And the thread is pretty negative so far but after this weekend it'll get a lot more positive.
