This is Boston -- Quincy, MA -- May 6th, 2013

This was an absolutely amazing show. It really was. I still can't get over how much fun I had last night. The untiy of the hardcore scene was really shown last night, everyone came out and fully represented Boston. Nothing but good vibes all night, no meathead bullshit, just everyone enjoying the music they love. All the proceeds for this show went to the One Fund, a charity set up for the Boston marathon bombing victims. The show sold out, and a bunch of money was raised off raffle tickets for some cool prizes. Overall an incredible night for a worthwhile cause.

The first band to play was Sexcrement. I hit a ton of traffig going down there, so I got there during their set. (I live north of Boston, and Quincy is south of Boston, so I had to drive through all the rush hour traffic... took me more than twice the time it would have if there was no traffic). The line to get in was kinda long, and the door was moving really slow, so I got in after Sexcrement finished. I've seen them a few times, but they are always fun so I was hoping to catch them again. No biggie though.

The next band to play was Insult. They are a really cool hardcore punk band that plays short, fast songs. Just the kind of punk I like. This was my second time seeing them, and they ruled just like last time. Not too much crowd activity, since people were still coming in. Still a really fun set. After Sexcrement and Insult I didn't really know any of the bands that well up until Dropdead (except Doomriders, who I had listened to briefly and enjoyed), so I wasn't too sure what I was getting into until then. I was excited to check out some Boston bands I had never seen though!

The Revilers came on and I could tell right away I was going to like them. They played a rock n roll punk sound in the vein of Motorhead that is right up my alley. Really fun to listen to. Although I had never heard them before last night, I am a fan now and will be checking out more of their material.

I bought a Dropdead t-shirt, which I've wanted for some time, and a cool poster of the flyer for the event. Then left for a bit to grab a snack and an energy drink, and came back to find that Alpha and Omega were onstage. Since one of the bands (For the Worse) dropped I think due to a member being in rehab, A&O were added, which I didn't even realize. I only heard the last song, and they were pretty uneventful hardcore. I had heard pretty good things about them, but they didn't do much for me from what I heard.

New Lows was next, and they were a hardcore band with a crazy lead singer. The crowd was really into them, but they were just okay to me. Not bad, but not too great either.Worth watching though!

Up next was Wrecking Crew, a hardcore band that had reunited for this show. Obviously a ton of people wanted to see them, cause the crowd when wild the whole time they were onstage. They put on a really entertaining performance. Tons of energy, and people were singing the lyrics and crowdsurfing the entire set. I somehow didn't really know about them, but they were awesome.

Wrecking Crew setlist (from setlist.fm):

Wild Mustangs
Guts and Glory
1000 Yard Stare
Tied Down

Doomriders is a band I had listened to a few times, and I liked what I heard. I am not overly familiar with their material, but I was looking forward to seeing them. They played metal/punk/rock n roll with a bit of a stoner feel, and the songs came across real well live. They crowd was really into them as well, with tons of crowdsurfers and people singing the lyrics. This was one of the most active crowds I have seen in a long time, it was cool to see people so into these bands. Doomriders is another band I will definitely be looking more into.

Dropdead was one of the main reasons I had to be at this show. For anyone unfamiliar with them, they play really intense punk/powerviolence, and they are one of my favorite punk bands. I just love everything about them; the music, the lyrics, what the stand for. I was right up front for their set, braving the crowdsurfers and moshers (I think since they aren't a hardcore dancing type of band I was able to be in the pit for them I like to mosh but can't hxc dance at all) The singer made some comments about animal rights, not eating meat, the power we have, and that we shouldn't let the government control us. Not preachy in any way, but if you disagree with those causes it may seem that way. I support all those causes so I loved it. Just an awesome set all around. Oh and they had the drummer of Siege come put at the end to do a couple songs, including "Drop Dead."

Slapshot played next, and the crowd was really into them. Stagedivers, crowdsurfers, moshers, and tons of people screaming into the microphone. They are hardcore legends in Boston, so getting to see them was a pretty awesome expreience. The way the place was set up was that the cieling at the front of the stage was pretty low, maybe only 6-6 1/2 feet high. So, a pretty big hole was put in the cieling by stagedivers, which had dust and plaster falling from it lol. Also, there were pipes that people were hanging from! Security tried to put an end to that, which they basically did, but the crowd was out of control. Slapshot did a few Stars and Stripes covers, and the crowd was loving it. Really fun.

Slapshot (from setlist.fm):

Back on the Map
No Friend of Mine
Watch Me Bleed
Old Tyme Hardcore
I've Had Enough
Shaved for Battle (Stars and Stripes cover)
Chip on My Shoulder
Step on It
Hang Up Your Boots
Skinheads on a Rampage (Stars and Stripes cover)

Converge closed out the show, and holy shit are they an intense live band. As soon as they kicked in, everyone forced their way forward to get close to the stage. I was in the middle of the floor, but was quickly pushed to the side to make room for hardcore dancers/moshers and people that knew all the songs by heart. It was okay though, watching the crowd go nuts from the side was an awesome experience. The band sounded amazing, and the entire performance was just so chaotic. Absolutely insane. Converge is closing out the last day at Maryland Deathfest, and I will absolutely be there. What an amazing way to end an incredible night that I will not soon forget.

Converge setlist (from setlist.fm):

The Saddest Day
Dark Horse
Eagles Become Vultures
Aimless Arrow
Bitter and Then Some
All We Love We Leave Behind
Sadness Comes Home
Axe to Fall
The Broken Vow
Last Light
Wolverine Blues (Entombed cover)
