Touché Amoré ‎– Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me

Full Album Part 1
Full Album Part 2

When I first heard this album, I connected with it on an emotional level that I hadn't experienced in a really long time. I guess ever since I got into metal, I took a much more music-focused approach to music and really left the lyrical side behind. Which, with metal, is pretty much okay and expected for a while. But this was like a fucking sledgehammer to my face the first time I heard it. I'd be surprised if anyone told me they listened to this album and couldn't relate to any of the lyrics. Of course TA's brand of screamo/post-hardcore is awesome music on its own, but the lyrics are really what boosted this up into my top 5 albums ever.

Slayer - South of Heaven

Full Album

Slayer's best album. A much-needed break from just SPEEEEEED and nothing else, this showed that slow songs can be just as evil as breakneck ones. The 1-2 punch of South Of Heaven -> Silent Scream is a perfect example of how the two styles work so well together. It's better song-writing than Reign In Blood and more thrash than Seasons In The Abyss. I really don't know what else to say than it's the best thrash album released by the Big Four and maybe even the greatest thrash record ever. It's evil as fuck, and isn't that what Slayer is all about? 666 horns out of 666.

Anaal Nathrakh - Hell Is Empty And All The Devils Are Here

Full Album

When I first got into Anaal Nathrakh, I only got to semi-live out the hype of Eschaton before it was released. Hell Is Empty is really the first AN release that I got to get hyped out of my mind for. I discussed every little thing about this album for days on end with other AN fans and the band themselves. And when it finally came out...it just absolutely blew me away. The sound on this album, to me, has a very futuristic feel to it. But like...futuristic in the way the album cover feels. Like, the album feels like the musical accompaniment to a Warhammer 40k universe - grim, desolate, but crisp and clean and efficient about causing misery and death. "Screaming Of The Unborn" and "Virus Bomb" have been my go-to "FUCK I need something loud and heavy RIGHT NOW" songs for a really long time. Genetic Noose feat. Joe Horvath of Circle Of Dead Children is my favorite guest-vocals Anaal Nathrakh song ever, and Castigation And Betrayal is my favorite album-ender for AN. This album is the right way to polish an extreme metal record without dredging into shit like djent or deathcore. One of the most extreme metal records ever made.

Radiohead - OK Computer

Full Album

There's no way I could ever write anything here that could convince other people to see this album the way I do, so I won't even try. I'll just say that Radiohead is my second favorite band of all-time and I would totally agree with anyone who says they are the best/most influential band since The Beatles, that this album is the best album of the 90s/all time and that this album is perfect. Just listen to it already.

Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro

Full Album

This is the greatest extreme music album ever made. That's not opinion, it's a fact.

When I received my first little batch of metal songs from a friend, Submission Is For The Weak was on it. It scared the absolute shit out of me. When he sent me The Supreme Necrotic Audnance, I couldn't even finish the song because it freaked me out too much. As I finally eased into it, it quickly became my favorite album of all time. It's not just black metal and grindcore with some electronic/industrial elements. It has just sinister undertones throughout the whole album. Kind of in the way that if used correctly, clean vocals and melodies can be extremely unnerving (hello King Diamond), Mick kind of implemented some of that ethos in his guitar playing here. The Supreme Necrotic Audnance and Pandemonic Hyperblast have some of these and it just makes everything so unsettling.

But the best thing about this album is that it is unrelenting hate and malice through-and-through. If you know the videogame "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream", I think The Codex Necro is the soundtrack to the events that happened before the beginning of that game. It's cold and mechanical but inhuman in the way vocals and samples are used throughout it. It's really a masterpiece that is obviously much more than just two guys recording instruments and vocals. The ending title track just concludes the album with a cacophonous racket that exemplified everything right with Anaal Nathrakh and extreme metal in general - terrifying, brutal noise.

I have recommended people wanting to get into Anaal Nathrakh to start elsewhere. This is just too fucking abrasive and maddening for a first-time extreme music listener to get into. Dave once said on a forum that he's really influenced by harsh/power electronics such as Whitehouse and Masonna, and it's totally evident on TCN.

There is no other album like this. There will never be another album like this. The best extreme metal album ever. My favorite album of all time.
