Hanzel und Gretyl -- Towson, MD -- February 15th, 2013
Full review w/ a ton of pix
Went to see Hanzel und Gretyl at Recher Theater. It was sparsely populated- horrible turnout, maybe 80 people? Deathmaschine was the opener we caught, they started off slow, but kicked into full gear after a few songs. Sounded fine to me, picked up their EP ($5). Nice opener to start with. For the Ministry cover they had fans help them on vox, brought to the stage. They also had quite possibly the best drum solo I've seen. and I hate drum solos. But something about this one was INTERESTING, as all members were drumming. Hanzel und Gretyl were on next and had their 2 person stage show, with outrageous costumes- Hanzel in spiked helmet, skull half mask, leather shorts reminiscent of lederhosen, leather vest w/ beer bandolier, and flying V guitar that screamed Scorpions. It was just them up there on stage, with some sort of sequencer/ electronic device that controlled the samples/drum /electronic /sample tracks. The Rock n Roll Experience guy alleged that there were parts that seemed to indicate that even more was piped in than expected. I can't confirm nor deny that, but it seemed like they were playing. Great show despite the thin crowd. Nice and loud, ridiculous, and some drunk guy drank out of another audience member's boot (for 'Das Boot'), and then Hanzel drank from some tall industrial pleather boot. Later, the drunk guy got more drunk and was hauled off and ejected from the venue. One of the few times I've seen someone discarded from the venue (and I've seen a LOT of shows). Setlists (approximate as I couldn't remember or didn't know some H +G stuff, got setlist from Deathmaschine themselves) Deathmaschine (9:05 -9:35)
Hanzel Und Gretyl (9:50-11:10)

Saw these guys open for prong about 100 years ago, they had a full band then.

Yeah I saw them a few years ago, and they at least had a drummer then.

These guys are so insanely fun live! I wish I would have caught them this last December instead of getting too drunk and oversleeping. I caught them headlining a couple years ago and it was a blast.
I could definitely see them phoning in some of the live sound. Kaiser drinks a ridiculous amount on stage. I've never seen someone drink that much on stage (except for maybe the vocalist from Primordial who killed like half a bottle of whiskey). They didn't have a drummer when I saw them at the end of 2010.

Haters gon Hate. I think an attention holding drum solo is hard to do.
