MANKY'S TOP 20 ALBUMS OF 2012!
20. Overkill - The Electric Age ![]() Not such a bad album, but Ironbound was such a homerun that their follow-up album was never going to top it. It seems like on a few songs they settle for not-quite thrash when everyone listening just wants Blitz and co. to unleash the beast! Although Ironbound/Electric Age might be two of the better new-albums-by-resurging-classic-thrash-bands of recent memory. So there's that. Standout tracks: Electric Rattlesnake, Wish You Were Dead, Save Yourself

Napalm Death - Utilitarian ![]() Another album that is a fine piece of work, yet kind of underwhelming to me. The last three albums by Napalm are classics in my opinion, but this one just seems like it's kind of going through the motions at times. Although the stuff they do with John Zorn here is pretty cool and atypical of most grind nowadays, it doesn't really connect with the rest of the album. The intensity and brutality is still there, but underneath a subdued approach that ultimately did more harm than good. Still the godfathers, though! Standout tracks: Everyday Pox, The Wolf I Feed, Opposites Repellant

Cannibal Corpse - Torture ![]() I'm actually pretty surprised at how great this album is. Cannibal found a heaviness that I thought might have been gone from most of their music recently. They showed a depth to their music writing by taking some risks like on "Followed Home Then Killed." This is a ton better than Evisceration Plague, and it makes me super excited for their future. Some of the songs fail to cross over the "yep, it's death metal" plateau that too many great bands fall victim to, but the ones that do cross over are fucking great. "Scourge Of Iron" follows in the steps of "Evisceration Plague" and "Death Walking Terror" as being one of the heaviest songs ever made. "Torture" still has that Cannibal Corpse Bounce (patent pending), so it's good enough for me. Hail the gods of death metal! Standout Tracks: Scourge Of Iron, Crucifier Avenged, Encased In Concrete
