Dragged Into Sunlight ![]() Austin, TX on June 3rd I've never felt how I felt watching DiS before. Not for any other live performance or anything. I was super worn out from the day, was kind of battling the beginnings of a cold and was almost in a trance-like state for Cross, who played before them. But whereas Dragged is just as heavy as the rest of the bill, it came through in a different way. I could've sword the finale to "Buried With Leeches" sounded just like Anaal Nathrakh when they were at their most vicious in 2001. And they just continued to pummel our senses (which is way different when an extreme metal band does it instead of drone/stoner) and when the entire band turned around at the apex of "I, Aurora" it was just one of the coolest moments I have ever seen. They're literally the definition of what it means to build up to a climax and explode over everyone in a satanic, drug-fueled glory.

Oh and if I was going to do an honorable mention for best performance, I'd give it to Polar Bear Club at Warped. They were flanked on each side by Taking Back Sunday and Sleeping With Sirens so there were literally like maybe 25 people watching them, but the band was super energetic and played fantastic. They made the entire crowd get up super close and go crazy with them.

TOP CONCERTS OF 2012
10. Ben Folds Five ![]() Kansas City, MO on September 28th with Kate Miller-Heidke Never thought I'd see the day where I'd get to see Ben Folds Five. This is about the millionth time I've seen Ben Folds in one way or another, and it was just as good as the other times. I needed to see Ben Folds Five, but I think I kinda like Ben Folds solo shows a bit more. It was still amazing hearing stuff like Jackson Cannery and Alice Childress, though. Kate Miller-Heidke is also the best opener I've seen with Ben.

Korpiklaani ![]() Lawrence, KS on September 4th with Moonsorrow, Tyr, Metsatoll and Stonehaven Now THIS is Paganfest! From the first band to the last, I had a huge smile on my face. Korpiklaani is more party than any thrash band in existence, and Moonsorrow was mystical. My favorite of the night might've been Tyr, though. They were really heavy and the crowd sang along with a lot of their songs. Valhalla!

Children of Bodom ![]() Lawrence, KS on February 6th with Eluveitie, Revocation, and Threat Signal Ace performances by each band, including Threat Signal whom I didn't really think I would enjoy that much. Easily the best time I've seen Bodom. Alexi Laiho was on fire all night and didn't miss a beat, and the crowd was extremely receptive. It was also something like a year to the day since I had last seen Eluveitie, and they still cemented themselves as one of my favorite live bands. Revocation was unfortunately getting a semi-lukewarm reception, but then they goofed around a bit and the crowd got SUPER into them about halfway through their set. Hoping I get to see each band again soon.

Kreator ![]() Kansas City, MO on September 16th with Accept, Swallow The Sun and Hellevate Another all-around solid show and great performances from each band. Was very surprised with how good Accept sounded after all these years. The sound wasn't amazing for Kreator, but they were extremely brutal. I loved the inclusion of Swallow The Sun too...nice change of pace. I think I might just automatically love every doom/death band I see live. I also got an Accept pick! ![]()

Metal Alliance 2012 ![]() Lawrence, KS on April 15th including Dying Fetus, The Faceless, 3 Inches Of Blood, Wretched and more Despite not being nearly as good as the year before, 2012's Metal Alliance still had some heavy hitters. Wretched were a surprisingly awesome opening band, 3 Inches Of Blood put on the best performance I've seen of them, The Faceless proved that they are much better live than on record, and Dying Fetus put on one of the best performances I've ever seen! They are so gosh darn heavy live I can't even articulate it. "Subjected to a Beating" was magnificent! Also I left before DevilDriver which is my new thing.
