The concert travels of PVH5150 in 2012

Because I haven't prepared a "Best of" album list for this year, I shall instead take everyone on a trip through New England and do a brief recap of every show I went to this year.

I was fortunate enough to attend 26 concerts this year. Probably would've hit the 30 mark if I didn't get laid off at the end of August. There were only a few low points this year, but overall, this was easily the best concertgoing year I've had.

Here we go!

Sunday, January 29th
Gigantour: Megadeth, Motorhead, Volbeat & Lacuna Coil
Tsongas Center
Lowell, Massachusetts

A damn good kickoff to the year. I doubt I'd see LC on their own, but Cristina has an excellent voice. Volbeat was the highlight of the show for me, as I wasn't aware that Hank Shermann of Mercyful Fate was playing guitar with them. Motorhead, what more needs to be said? 3rd time seeing them and they were as awesome & loud as ever. First time seeing Megadeth and they were also excellent.

Lacuna Coil: 7/10
Volbeat: 9.5/10 (I know it's their popular song, but this was the only night of the tour where they didn't play Warrior's Call & I was looking forward to hearing that)
Motorhead: 9/10
Megadeth: 9/10

Friday, March 9th
Dystopia World Tour
Iced Earth, Symphony X & Warbringer
The Palladium (downstairs)
Worcester, Massachusetts

A solid beginning to an excellent weekend. I went to this show only being familiar with Iced Earth & only having heard of Symphony X & Warbringer. Warbringer was excellent, definitely one of the better modern thrash bands. Symphony was cool, music wise, but this ended up being a low point for me. They insisted on using strobe lights nonfuckingstop throughout their set and it legitimately made me sick to my stomach and gave me a splitting headache. Had to go outside immediately after their set to get some air and regain my composure. IE made up for everything though, they were fantastic.

Warbringer: 9/10
Symphony X: 8/10
Iced Earth: 9.5/10

Sunday, March 11th
A Different Kind of Truth Tour
Van Halen, with special guests Kool & The Gang
TD Garden
Boston, Massachusetts

I remember them announcing the tour the day after Christmas in 2011. It was the best gift I've gotten in years. This was the only time I've ever used StubHub to get my ticket, because I wanted the best possible seat regardless of cost. I ended up with 16th row on the floor in front of Eddie for 265 bucks. Yes, I'm insane, but only for a certain few bands. K&TG started off slow but they ended up winning over the crowd by the end of their set. They were a good opener (unlike one of Bob Marley's offspring on the 2007 tour). VH blasted through 24 songs in just under 2 hours and I had the fucking time of my life. Oh, and Boston was the first place they played Hang 'Em High for the first time since 1982. That made the night even more kickass.

Kool & The Gang: 8.5/10
Van Halen: 9.75/10 (The only thing that kept it from being perfect was that Dave didn't sound nearly as good as he did in 2007. Eddie, Al & Wolfie more than made up for it though.)

Many more to come later on tonight & tomorrow. I'm heading out now to have fun driving in this snowstorm.

Thursday, April 5th
The Heritage Hunter Tour
Opeth, Mastodon & Ghost
Orpheum Theater
Boston, Massachusetts

One of many excellent shows this year. First time seeing all the bands listed. Ghost opened and they were the best sounding live band I've ever experienced. Everything was mixed perfectly. Mastodon was great for the most part, except Brent was tanked off his ass and kept tripping over his guitar cable, having to stop the show 2 or 3 times. Opeth was phenomenal. Someone in the crowd yelled "EATEN!!" and Mikael goes "Yes, I have eaten, thank you." Definitely one of the highlight shows of my year.

Ghost: 9.5/10 (Just wish they could've played longer)
Mastodon: 8.5/10
Opeth: 10/10

Saturday, April 28th
The Hey...Cruel World Tour
Marilyn Manson & The Pretty Reckless
Casino Ballroom
Hampton Beach, New Hampshire

Just for the sake of seeing him in person, I felt compelled to go to this show. I heard his Mayhem 2009 shows were awful so I was hoping that after a couple years of rest that he'd be better. The Pretty Reckless opened and they were pretty cool. Taylor Momsen was definitely nice to look at & the band had an old school rock n roll vibe. I'd see them again if they came around. For the most part, Manson was good. Only wished he played longer. Hit the stage at 9 and the show was over by 1020.

The Pretty Reckless: 8.5/10
Marilyn Manson: 8/10

Made In Germany 1995-2012 Tour
Rammstein
DCU Center
Worcester, Massachusetts

Rammstein's first show in Massachusetts since the dick incident of 1999. They had announced this show like 6 months in advance, so I was very very ready for this to happen. Literally the only thing I would've changed was getting rid of the opener (I honestly don't remember who it was, it was some DJ) and have Rammstein play 3 or 4 more songs. Either way, they set the gold standard for an over the top show. More pyro in the show alone than in every other show I've seen combined. One of my favorites of the year.

Rammstein: 9.75/10

I wish I had seen Van Halen this year. They canceled the show I had a ticket for.
