Black Breath - Sentenced to Life ![]() You seriously cannot go wrong with Black Breath whatsoever. Their unique style of crust punk, thrash metal and the buzzsaw guitar tone commonly found in Swedish death metal is one hell of a force to be reckoned with. Heavy Breathing was an awesome album and Sentenced to Life just kicks as much ass, if not more. Tons of memorable riffs and patterns throughout the entire album, which makes it one of the best of the year. This band is way too underrated.

Pig Destroyer - Book Burner ![]() This album is fucking ridiculous. Pig Destroyer are back with one hell of an album. Just awesome riffs and crazy drumming throughout the entire album. Adam Jarvis is a god damn beast. Oh, and the 2 songs with Katherine Katz from Agoraphobic Nosebleed are definitely the best on the album, by far. I'm gonna post them because they're that fucking good. Eve The Bug - This is definitely one of my favorite songs of the year.

Deathhammer - Onward to the Pits ![]() So many neo thrash bands... all sounding the same... This is one huge exception, however. Many bands try to recapture the 80s sound of thrash metal and fail miserably, but Deathhammer nail it right on the head. THIS is how you make awesome thrash metal in this day and age. You don't start off with some "epic" or "atmospheric" intro, no acoustic guitar passages, no bullshit. You start it off fast as shit and keep it that way the entire time, and that's how Deathhammer does it. Fast riffs, faster drumming, and just crazy vocals. THIS IS FUCKING THRASH.

Evoken - Atra Mors ![]() Evoken are another one of those bands you can never go wrong with. Every album they have released has been amazing and this one is no exception. Funeral Doom with an atmosphere so haunting, it's just ridiculous. One thing that stood out to me was the drum sound. It just sounds... awesome, I guess. Don't know how to describe it, but this album is totally worth a listen. The best way to describe the atmosphere of this album is the album art, really. Just grey, haunting and eerie.

Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity ![]() Cattle Decapitation have come a long way for sure. No doubt about it, this is their best album to date. Every person in this band is so talented at what they do it's unbelievable. I don't think there's any point in describing them individually as they are all just going nuts on this album. The lyrics are sick as hell but awesome at the same time, and a lot of the guitar riffs and leads are very much memorable. One of the best death metal albums of the year, possibly in the past 10 years. I have yet to find someone who thought this album was horrible, or even mediocre.

Dying Fetus - Reign Supreme ![]() Holy shit. They weren't fucking around with this one. From the very first second you know that Dying Fetus are going to pummel your face in for the entirety of the album. While their last album, Descend Into Depravity, seemed to focus on more technicality than anything, Reign Supreme showcases more brutality and riffing, but still having a good amount of technicality. Seriously, there are so many killer riffs and breakdowns/slams it's not even funny. Almost ranked this as my #1, but my actual #1 seems to surpass this one, even though it comes incredibly close. Listen to this beast!

Asphyx - Deathhammer ![]() From the moment this album was announced I knew it was going to be killer. They released the song titles (seriously, with a title like "As the Magma Mammoth Rises" you know it's going to fucking destroy), then the artwork which was fucking AWESOME, and then they released the title track. While the "THIS IS TRUE DEATH METAL YA BASTARDS" was pretty cheesy, that track crushed, just like the rest of the album does. The album is divided evenly into fast, brutal tracks, and slow, incredibly crushing tracks. Both are good but the ones that get my attention are the slower ones. They also do a cover of Celtic Frost's "Os Abysmi Vel Daath," which is just perfect. Asphyx covering Monotheist-era Celtic Frost. Holy shit. Asphyx are one of the king bands in death/doom and they sure know how to do it right. So yes, this could well be the best Asphyx album since Last One On Earth, and it is my #1 album of 2012 as well. I'd post the full album but not all the tracks are on Youtube... so here's "As the Magma Mammoth Rises", possibly the best track on the album. As the Magma Mammoth Rises
