Suffocation -- Cambridge, MA -- November 11th, 2012

Lineup : Suffocation, Totality, Sexcrement, Abnormality, Scaphism. Suffocation played for an hour, and all the other bands played for about a half hour to 40 minutes.

I'll just do a quick review for this show. Walked in during the second to last song in Scaphism's set. Okay death metal, nothing special but not too terrible. I hadn't really listnened to them more than a couple times before the show, so I'm not sure how good they really are.

Abnormality was up next. My first time seeing them, even though I've been wanting to for some time. The play great brutal death metal that really got the crowd going. Their vocalist Mallika is sick and she had a great stage presence, even jumping into the crowd a few times. I gotta listen to their new album some more, and hopefully I will be seeing them again next month. My second favorite set of the night.

Next was Sexcrement, who are exactly what you would expect based on their name. They play groovy death metal with sleazy, gross-out porn lyrical themes. They even had a dancer onstage throughout the set who was basically almost naked by the end. It was so over the top and tacky, but that is exactly what this band is. Their set was a lot of fun though.

Totality came on second to last, and they were the only band going into the show I wasn't really looking forward to. They play death metal/deathcore, and their sound is just prety boring to me. The crowd was pretty into them though, getting possibly the second best reaction of the night. I always see people with their shirts at shows in the area, so I know they have a decent amount of fans here. I also thought their stage presence was a littly gimmicky, but not really in an entertaining way. I don't know, just not my thing.

Obviously Suffocation was last, and it was great to see these legends in the smaller Middle East after seeing them in the larger Palladium in Worcester twice. They put on such an amazing show, and the brutality of their songs comes across just as well live as on recordings. As usual, Frank Mullen is a great frontman who always has entertaining banter in between songs. Topics for tonight were putting people in wood chippers after they die, hating religion, and how the end of the world is coming. He also said how that show was a lot better than seeing Megadeth, who were playing in Worcester that night. Great finish to an awesome show, and Suffocation proves once again that they are one of the best bands to see live. Oh yeah and Frank said don't listen to the rumors about him not playing with the band anymore, he said he would do what he could to play shows whenever he could, which is great news.

Suffocation setlist:
1. Thrones of Blood
2. Effigy of the Forgotten
3. Catatonia
4. Abomination Reborn
5. Pierced From Within
6. Funeral Inception
7. Liege of Inveracity
8. Cataclysmic Purification
9. Devoid of Truth
10. Jesus Wept
11. Infecting the Crypts

I prefer Liege of Inveracity as an opener, really gets the crowd going. Great set still.

I personally love thrones of blood as an opener, the mid paced build up makes when the fast part kicks in soooooo intense
