Video Games Live -- Toronto, ON -- October 25th, 2012

Video Games Live
Date: Thursday October 25th, 2012
Venue: Massy Hall in Toronto, Ontario

So I went to see Distant Worlds: the Music of Final Fantasy back in March and it reminded me how much I love video game music. I’ve played a lot of games in my life, not so much now but when I was a kid and a teenager, so it’s safe to say I’ve listened to more video game music than any other music in my life. It’s an important part of my childhood. So when I posted the setlist from the Final Fantasy concert someone here mentioned I should go see Video Games Live. So here we are. I’ve always been a fan of Tommy Tallarico, mainly from his work on Electric Playground and Reviews on the Run. Even though he gave Knights of the Old Republic a terrible review. I don't think I've played any games he worked on other than Earthworm Jim.

No real story, I’ll just talk about the show. It was great! There’s so much video game music to draw from that where do you start? I knew he was going to play some of the favorites like Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda. But it was great that they played more current stuff too. Shit, they played fucking Vigil from Mass Effect! That’s one of my favorite pieces of music, video game or otherwise. So what more could I ask for? They played some pretty funny cartoons between songs too. I don’t know what they were, probably youTube videos. Highlights were Mass Effect (obviously) and Skyrim. The show ended a little anti-climactically, almost rushed like the venue was kicking them out. I’d change that. The Portal song was funny but I’d stick it in the middle of the set and close with something like Mario that would drive the crowd nuts.

Overall it’s hard for me to decide which of the two video game shows I like better. Video Games Live was more visually stimulating and varied but there was a lot of music I’d never heard in my life. The Final Fantasy one was all music I knew and loved but a little boring to watch and the talking between songs was a lot more labored than this. I guess I liked the Final Fantasy one better but either show is great and if one comes to your town you should check it out.

Most of the songs performed we just main themes or medleys.

Setlist
1. Castlevania
2. Kingdom hearts
3. Civilization IV
4. Super Smash Bros. (with people from the audience playing the game for a prize)
5. World of Warcraft “Wrath of the Lich King”: Invincible
6. Mass Effect: Vigil and main theme
7. Donkey Kong Country
8. Earthworm Jim
9. Journey
10. Chrono Trigger
11. Chrono Cross
12. Tetris Opera
(Intermission)
13. The Legend of Zelda
14. Final Fantasy VIII: Liberi Fatali
15. Final Fantasy VII: Aerith’s Theme
16. Skyrim
17. Super Mario Bros.
18. Guitar Hero: Foo Fighters Pretender (with some guy from the audience playing Guitar Hero while the orchestra played the song too)
19. Street Fighter 2
Encore:
20. Pokémon
21. Portal: Still Alive

Portal: Still Alive sounds like a terrible idea for a grand finale.

It was. Maybe since it was from the end credits of the game that was what they were going for. But putting it in the middle of the set, or at the end of the regular set would've been best.
