Limited Edition IRON MAIDEN vinyl releases

"A series of special limited edition IRON MAIDEN vinyl picture disc albums are due to be released by EMI starting in October 2012. Comprised of the first eight albums of Maiden’s career, all released in the 1980’s, each picture disc will be packaged in a gatefold sleeve with full colour printed inner bags and the heavyweight vinyl will be cut from the original album master tapes.

The albums will be released chronologically between October and February, starting with ‘Iron Maiden’ and ‘Killers’ on 15 October 2012 followed by ‘The Number Of The Beast’ and ‘Piece Of Mind’ in November 2012.

To open the new year ‘Powerslave’ and the double album ‘Live After Death’ will be released in January, with the final two titles, ‘Somewhere In Time’ and ‘Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son’ coming out in February 2013.

These vinyl picture discs are being released to commemorate IRON MAIDEN’s current Maiden England tour which comprises largely 80’s material, in particular focussing on the ‘Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son’ album."

Why picture discs. WHY!? They inherently sound shitty! This pretty much makes the fact that they're going back to the tape masters irrelevant. This could have been really cool, especially since the CD remasters sound like crap. Oh well, looks like I gotta keep hunting for an original issue Seventh Son.

I've been thinking for years that they should do this...just not on picture discs.

OK, I own like five vinyl releases, and have never played any of them... but why do picture discs sound crap?

This is my understanding of it, but a picture disc is basically a cardboard or paper sheet placed in between two really thin slabs of vinyl. For the most part, picture discs are just really noisy and poorly pressed- they're meant to be collectibles or wall hangers, not definitive editions. Apparently the picture disc edition of The Final Frontier was supposed have really great mastering, but the noise was pretty bad in exchange. Colored or splattered vinyl is just as good as regular black vinyl since it's just a change in the dye though. (Vinyl is clear by default, but it's dyed black as a standard).

I think these are being made as more of a collectable than to be played.

That's the reason i'm interested in getting them. It's just something cool to add to the collection. I haven't listened to anything on vinyl since like 1990.
