The tourist attractions are shut down in order to make a point/statement- that congress needs to get its shit together. Fact of the matter is that the "government shutdown" isn't really the end of the country in any way, hence why necessary public services (law enforcement, air traffic control etc) continues and the stock market is basically unchanged.

A government shutdown happens when, for whatever reason, Congress can't pass the budget bill that funds the government for the fiscal year. If they don't pass the funding bill, then by law the government cannot spend taxpayer money, hence all non-essential personnel have to be sent home without pay until it's resolved. People who are in positions that are essential to safety or national security keep working and keep getting paid.

In this case, it was caused by the Republicans refusing to pass the funding bill unless President Obama's healthcare reform was repealed or delayed, and neither side is willing to budge.

Interesting. Wouldn't happen here. The annual budget doesn't require agreement from the opposition.

The band has played a reworked version of their song "MTV Get Off the Air", re-titled "MP3 Get Off the Web", with lyrics criticizing music piracy during their October 16, 2010, concert at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington, D.C..
Jesus Christ, that's sad.

Neither does ours...if one party controls both houses of Congress. Right now, the Democrats have the presidency and the Senate, but the Republicans control the house, which basically equals one huge clusterfuck and it's why Obama can't get anything done.
