How many opening acts is too many?

As I get older, I find bills with more than 3 bands on them to be tiring, and I'm finding myself showing up late on purpose a lot more. A lot of the time, the first band or 2 bands get a lukewarm reception at best. So I just have to ask, what's the point?

Recent example would be the Bolt Thrower show a few weeks back. Nobody in the crowd cared about the first two bands at all. It could have been just Bolt Thrower and Razor, and everyone would have been happy. Once in awhile there will be at a club gig with 4 or so bands who are all great, but I find shows with more than 3-4 bands who are all excellent to be pretty rare.

Ghost only have one opener on their upcoming tour, and King Crimson is an evening with, which makes me really happy.

So am I just getting old, or do more people feel the same way?

Unfortunately my opinion is always influenced by whether or not I like the bands or how familiar I am with them. If there are 4 opening bands and I happen to dig all of them before hand, and am familiar with their stuff, I'm all about it. So it's possible that there can only be 3 bands on a tour but i'm just not into the first two and can think it runs really long.

For the most part though, I'm in your boat and I find myself showing up a little bit later each time too unless there's a support band I do want to see. If it's a designated package tour i'll usually show up for the whole thing since those tickets can get a bit pricier and want to get a bit more of my money's worth. But for the regular club tours that have a lot of bands tacked on there's just an overall feeling of complete indifference by whatever small amount of people are there. That's one negative of going to shows alone (which I do for about 90% of them). I just find myself feeling bored and staring at my phone a lot of the time near the back.

The one thing I do need to get into the habit of is calling the venue beforehand and finding out when the bands actually start playing. I'm sick of this "Doors at 7, first band at 8:30" bullshit.

It depends on what the lineup is, but in general anything more than two opening bands is too much for me now. After 23 years of being a regular concert goer, i've grown tired of watching opening act, after opening act that I don't care for.

Over the last five years, i've gotten in the habit of showing up late if there's multiple openers, usually arriving just before or while the main support act is playing. I find the shows more enjoyable by doing this. You get in, watch the band you came to see then get the fuck out. It's a nice, enjoyable night out that is over and done with in a timely manner.

Sitting through multiple openers I don't care for can sometimes hurt my enjoyment of the headliner. Because after a few hours of listening to bands I don't like, i'm tired and just want to go home by the time the headliner hits the stage. That's the other thing, having less openers I think will keep the crowd fresher and more energetic for the headliner. You don't need to wear down the crowd by having three or more openers.

I think 2 openers is good, 1 is best and 3 max. even if I like all the bands, more than 3 is still too much.

I've seen so many shit openers in my life that I'm done with them. I purposely leave my house when doors open, it's usually about an hour drive to the show and I let whatever happens happen. Unless there's a band I want to see but that hasn't happened in years. Maybe I've missed something great but chances are I haven't.

I get a little bored at shows after awhile so standing through too many openers has killed many a main acts for me. Even if I like them it's just too much like Slapguitarer said. I've had to start drinking at shows to kill the monotony and keep myself entertained. And thank god for Smartphones between sets.

So to answer the question I'm going to say two.

It depends on the type of show.

Rock shows should be 1-2 max.

Metal shows 3 is usually good.

Hardcore shows can be anywhere from 3-5 and be good.

I don't like more than two openers, even if I know and like them all.

I'm agreeing with everyone else 2, 3 at max. If I had it my way there would be more "evening with" type shows

The fewer opening acts the better. Most of the time they're not all that good, but even when they are, it just makes me more tired for the headliner.

The only reason I don't think it makes that much of a difference is because I think shows will still run just as late.

1. Okay, 2.
Even if its a band I like, I'll probably lament the fact that I'd be getting a longer, more varied show if said band was headlining.
