Shit, I'd actually completely forgotten about that! I always think of two things with Benoit: 1) The ending (obviously) and 2) Him getting a day with the title in WCW. So Punk will be third to win the Royal Rumble in such circumstance. Legend.

Shawn Michaels was number one in 1995 and won it. Rey Mysterio won it from the number 2 spot in 2006 I think it was. The first two spots are the same in the match, so even though the world's tallest midget winning it was a complete joke, he still went the full distance entering at two.

Not surprised at Michaels, but definitely at Mysterio. I was on the way out of paying attention in '06, did Mysterio win the title then at Mania?

He did.

Funny thing about that Rumble was Triple H entered at one, Mysterio at two. Triple H was the second to last person eliminated.

Unfortunately, Mysterio did win the belt at mania that year, he beat Kurt Angle and Randy Orton in a triple threat match. I know you're supposed to suspend your disbelief in wrestling but him winning the big gold belt was just flat out embarrassing. He only got the push to be champ because Eddie Guerrero died and they decided it would be nice for his friend Rey to win it in his memory. That's yet another reason to be upset at Eddie's death, it lead to that abomination of a title reign.

I didn't watch smackdown again until later that summer when Booker T beat Rey for the belt. At least that was a guy worthy of the title and was worth watching as champion. Especially since Booker had won the king of the ring and was playing the awesome King Booker character then.

Rey Mysterio is fine in a mid card role. I don't mind him as a IC/US or tag champ. But he had no business being the world heavyweight champion. When the belt is bigger than the man who wears it, it's not a good idea to put it on him.

There have been a lot of bad champions, undeserving guys or guys who just aren't ready, but Rey was just bad. He got his ass handed to him every match. Worst. Champion. Ever.
