Doors were at 8 and me and my lady arrived around 8:45. We checked out the merch and by a few minutes after 9 the first band, American Sharks, started playing. These guys are a newer Austin band that play some punky stoner rock in the vein of Red Fang. Very upbeat, short songs and according to their stage banner they do it in the name of Satan. One of their shirts for sale was the state of Texas with a big inverted cross in the middle of it. They played maybe 8-10 songs in a little under 30 minutes. I would be glad to see them again as local support for the right kind of show. My fiance enjoyed them quite a bit. After American Sharks finished we met up with cojibo from MetalSetLists and a few of my other concert buddies and chatted about upcoming shows and whatnot before the other opener, Dixie Witch, took the stage. They’re a three piece 70s style southern hard rock band with blues rock meets metal guitar riffs bring Clutch to mind at times. As a local favorite they always get a room full of heads nodding, leaving empty beer cans in their wake. By the time Dixie Witch was wrapping up their last couple songs the venue was quickly filling with more bodies and anticipation.
After what seemed like an eternity (actually about 30 minutes) the almighty hometown heroes of the Austin metal scene, The Sword took the stage in front of a roaring crowd. As soon as they kicked into Night City a nice sized pit opened up in the middle and was active most of the night. It was a bit of a greatest hits kind of set list with some new songs played live for the first time. A couple of the new tracks had a bit of a sludgy feel to them while the song Seven Sisters sounded like it could’ve been on Warp Riders. We left after they finished Arrows In The Dark, but I read online that their encore included Iron Swan and Winter’s Wolves among others. This show was a blast and the band sounded great.

I really hope they come back here soon! "Hammer" was almost certainly a new track titled "Hammer of Heaven" which was apparently going to be on Age of Winters but was scrapped due to having lame lyrics or something (which they've since fixed). Read about it the other day on one of their Facebook posts.

What a great band...

Thanks for the shout out Mr. smearCampaign \m/

twas a good night and a nice surprise was American Sharks, nice and groovy with constant referencing to our friend Satan. The inverted cross over the the state of Texas is quite odd, especially in this state.

I wish I would have known more of the tracks played last night by The Sword, but I sure enjoyed the set and the pits were quite active. Oddly, yet appropriately, there were a couple of lesbians in control of the pit the entire night. Overall, I intend to check out The Sword every time they play in Austin from now on!
