They are usually somewhat important to the overall feel. It's like you don't want to go see a hardcore show and have every just stand there and watch. Sometimes a bad crowd can make a show feel worse.

I know what you mean but there's other ways to have a good crowd besides moshing. The crowds performance can also depend on the performers energy on stage.

I continue to go to Behemoth shows simply to support a band I love. Yeah the set list leaves a bit to be desired, but it's freakin BEHEMOTH
