Distant Worlds: Music From Final Fantasy -- Toronto, ON -- March 31st, 2012

Distant Worlds: Music From Final Fantasy
Date: March 31st, 2012
Venue: the Sony Center for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Ontario

I'll post this in the General Chat section since it's bad enough when people post U2 and Radiohead setlists in in the main section (which I've done before).

Final Fantasy games are something I've spent most of my life growing up with. The first one I ever played was Final Fantasy 2 on the Super Nintendo back in 1991. Some of them have been really good and some of them have been really bad. But one thing that is always consistently good in a Final Fantasy game, and what drew me to the games initially, is the music. Yes, it's video game music. Not something you can head-bang to or sing along with. But it's an important part of a role-playing game like Final Fantasy. When I saw the poster for this show a year ago I knew it would be something I would want to check out. I'm not too into classical or orchestral music but I figured why not. I got the tickets and waited a year. Over the year I found the programme online and was a little disappointed by what was being played. I'm more into the standout songs like Who...Are You? and Valley of the Fallen Star from Final Fantasy VII or the town music of Mysidia from Final Fantasy IV. But like seeing a band who has been around for twenty five years and has released a ton of albums, there was no way I was going to hear everything I wanted to. This was, obviously, the more orchestral music, usually the main themes.

So knowing what to expect we went and I still had an awesome time. Yes, an awesome time. Even though a lot of it wasn't my favorite music from the games it was still music that is near and dear to me. The video screens playing CGI or game footage from the games was really good too. I liked the music from the games I'm more fond of (like VI) but everything was performed specatularily. If I have any complaints it's that there were too many spoken breaks (pretty much between every song) and nothing from Final Fantasies XII or XIII, two of the games with the best music in the series. I only found out afterwards that a different guy composed the music from those two games so that's why they didn't play much (Nobuo Uematsu, the main composer of the first eleven Final Fantasies, was in attendance). And one last complaint, which is more of a compliment to the presenters, was that it was way too short. It still clocked in at just over two hours but me and my brothers agreed that they could've easily played for another hour or two.

I wasn't keeping track of everything that got played but I'm pretty sure this is it, save being totally out of order.

1. Prelude/Main Theme (all Final Fantasies)
2. (something from Final Fantasy VIII)
3. You're Not Alone (Final Fantasy IX)
4. Don't be Afraid (Final Fantasy VIII)
5. (something from Final Fantasy XIII)
6. To Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X)
7. Theme of Love (Final Fantasy IV)
8. Ronfaure (Final Fantasy XI)
9. Chocobo Medley (all Final Fantasies)
(intermission)
10. (something from Final Fantasy VII)
11. Fisherman's Horizon (Final Fantasy VIII)
12. Man With A Machine Gun (Final Fantasy VIII)
13. Dark World w/Nobuo Uematsu on keyboards (Final Fantasy VI)
14. Aerith's Theme (Final Fantasy VII)
15. Battle on the Bridge (Final Fantasy V)
16. Opera "Maria and Draco" w/three classically trained singers doing the vocal parts (Final Fantasy VI)
17. Terra's Theme (Final Fantasy VI)
encore:
18. One-Winged Angel w/Nobuo Uematsu joining the choir (Final Fantasy VII)

I have to say, it was nice to be at a concert where I wasn't the biggest geek in the room. And there were a lot of HOT Japanese girls.

Highly recommend it. I'm not the type for classical music but I love video games so I was all over it plus it helped I was in the second row. Plus there's a pretty good chance Tommy Tallarico (Creator of the show) worked on a soundtrack of a game you like.

Incredibly jealous you got to see this. Looking into catching this in London this November, hearing To Zanarkand live is something I've wanted to do since the game came out, 10 years ago!
