Anaal Nathrakh (UK)
The Codex Necro (2001) Earache Records



Extreme music for extreme people? This is it... one of the most insane bands I've ever listened to, Anaal Nathrakh belongs to a genre of its own; with a musical style containing elements of black metal, industrial, and grindcore, every release is an aural attack, bleeding out unrelenting nihilism and hate. With their debut album, The Codex Necro, Anaal Nathrakh set the groundwork for their future recordings, though arguably this album has the most industrial influences to it.

I trust you all know who Agalloch are... a magical and emotional journey into the minds of the extremely gifted Portland, OR-based USBM quartet, Ashes Against the Grain may possibly be one of my favorite black metal albums. With atmospheric and calming pieces like "Fire Above, Ice Below" and "Limbs", as well as beautiful yet anger-filled songs like "Falling Snow", the album is an extraordinary work of art, coming together at only eight tracks, altogether a mere hour. While other Agalloch albums such as The Mantle and latest release Marrow of the Spirit also hold a place in my heart, Ashes is without a doubt their best album.

As much as I love Agalloch's every output, this is their most complete album in my eyes. Interesting that you term "Falling Snow" an anger-filled song because I feel like its one of their most up tempo and "feel good" songs. But hey, that's what their music is about, everyone comes away with their own interpretation which is quite fascinating really.

One of these days, Falling Snow is going to make me cry from how good it is. I agree with you that it's a feel-good song (makes me feel good!) but there's a lot of pain that I hear in it too.

Among the Living (1987) Island Records



At the time I first heard this album, it was the fastest metal I had ever heard. My first listen of Caught in a Mosh and Efilnikufesin probably made me start a mosh pit in my room, as lame as that sounds! Arguably Anthrax's best album, the youthful vigour the band possessed in 1987 (and still does, if not youthful) brings this record an adrenaline kick, with great drumming from Charlie Benante and vocals from Joey Belladonna, one of my favorite metal vocalists.

That's fine. I remember being like 13 and discovering Slayer and playing their live dvds in my living and running in a circle pretending I was in a circle pit.

But great cds so far!
