Thumbs up Nile -- Cleveland, OH -- March 23rd, 2012

Venue: Peabody's
Source: Yours truly

So apparently this was the second of two warm-up dates for Nile and Hour of Penence prior to their tour with The Black Dahlia Murder. Nothing against TBDM, but I am a much bigger Nile fan, so I was pretty pumped to be seeing them play this gig as a headliner with HoP in direct support.

The evening started out with two opening acts. The first was an outfit called Eyeless Abomination from Bradford, PA. They played a mediocre brand of death metal with strong *core tendencies and seemed to have a penchant for breakdowns. Ugh. Pass. I got bored rather quickly and wandered over to the merch table area, where Karl Sanders himself was sitting with Nile's merch gal. I shook his hand and thanked him for stopping by to play a show in my hometown, and he said, "hey man, Cleveland counts too!" I didn't know whether to be pleased that he seemed to enjoy playing in Cleveland, or pissed that the other bands on the tour didn't, but since I knew he meant well, I gave him a brofist and said something like, "damned straight, brother". I bought a tour shirt - the last XXL they had. Now don't get me wrong, I'm glad I got one in my size, but what the fuck, Chuck? How do you run out of XXL tour shirts on THE SECOND NIGHT OF THE PRE-TOUR?!? Anyway, as some of you may know this is a pet peeve of mine, but whatever. I digress.

The second band up was an outfit called Destroy the Architech (sic), out of Silver Creek, NY. Their schtick was basically the same as the first band, but I felt they may have sucked a little less. Whatever. I didn't really listen to their set much, but later in the evening I did come across a written copy of their set list, so for what it's worth, here it is:

Destroy the Architech
I Am Hate
Disposed
Bodies in the Trunk
Murder Porn
2 the Point
Silent Night
The Butcher
The Cleansing

Next up was Hour of Penance. I had just started listening to them within the last couple of weeks, and I like their Behemoth-esque brand of brutal death metal quite a bit. The album I had focused on the most was Paradogma, which I like a lot. Their new album Sedition comes out next week, and much to my surprise, they were selling copies of it, so I bought a copy from their lead vocalist / guitarist Paolo. He seemed to be a chill, gracious guy behind the merch table, but he was much less "nice" behind the mic (which was great). The new album is very good, by the way - they played three songs from it, and two of the three were among the best in their set. When he introduced the song "Decimate...", he described it as "the fastest song we've ever fucking written". Indeed. Also, the track "Ascension" has a really catchy death metal groove to it with some really nice chanty parts that just promotes headbanging big-time. Here's the entire set list:

Hour of Penance
Sedition Through Scorn
Paradogma
Absence of Truth
Incestuous Dynasty of Worms
Slavery in a Deaf Decay
Incontrovertible Doctrines
Ascension
Decimate the Ancestry of the Only God
Misconception

Finally, it was time for the mighty Nile. The band members came out to do their own sound checks, to a chorus of cheers, raised horns and chants from the crowd. I could tell this was going to be another awesome show. After sound checks, they went backstage for a second and then came back out, greeted the crowd, and just started playing. I mean, there was some sort of intro track playing with some typical instrumental dramatic-sounding orchestral stuff, but basically the fanfare was minimal. That's what I love about these guys. They are some of the most talented fuckers around, but they don't seem to let that go to their heads. They genuinely love their fans, and it shows in their performance. For example, when they played the new track, Karl said, "the label told us they didn't want us to play any new material, but fuck that - we love our fans, and we wanna give them what they want". Classic. Granted, they know they are good. For example, when I jokingly shouted out "play something heavy" after they played "Papyrus", Dallas heard what I had said, and without a hitch, walked up to the mic and said, "you got anything heavier?" The crowd hooted in delight, and they launched into their next song.

So as it turns out, the set list was almost exactly the same as when I saw them on tour for Those Whom the Gods Detest, except for a new song called "Supreme Humanism of Megalomania" (which was pretty damned awesome, by the way) substituted for "4th Arra of Dagon". It was a decent trade-off (although "4th Arra" is also pretty damned awesome). Still, it was one of the best, heaviest sets I've ever seen. These guys are just so tight and so damned heavy live, it almost defies logic. Anyway, here is their set list:

Nile
Kafir!
Sacrifice Unto Sebek
Hittite Dung Incantation
Serpent Headed Mask
Execration Text
Ithyphallic
Supreme Humanism of Megalomania (new)
Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve Its Possessor Against Attacks from He Who Is in the Water
Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld
Sarcophagus
Cast Down the Heretic
Lashed to the Slave Stick
Black Seeds of Vengeance

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck, that's a great Nile set! Hittite, Pemitting, Scroll, Ithyphallic, Heretic... I just hope they don't have to cut too much out for opening for BDM. And kind of wish we had more representation from Nephren-Ka, but oh well.

All that was substituted was new song & 4th Arra Of Dagon. The order is almost song for song from their 2010 tour. It's a great set but I expected a bit more than a song difference in 2 years. Not as disappointed about missing this now.

I really wish they were still playing 4th Arra. It's possibly my favorite song of that album.

I somewhat thought this was the case, but I hadn't had a chance to check and confirm it yet. I tried to get them to play 4th Arra as an encore by starting up a chant for it, especially since they technically could have done it (set ended at ~11:30), but they had their minds made up already. Oh well. It was still a great set with a totally sick one-two punch for an ending (Slave Stick and Black Seeds).

Yea that's still a kick in the face to close set w/ Slave Stick & Black Seeds. I'll wait to pass full judgement until I know if that is what they play. If there were markets who didn't get Nile in '10 I understand but it was a long tour & I'm sure they hit up A & B markets.

You mean you're not going to come into the heart of Lawrence in the middle of what could be a Jayhawks national championship run?!
