Merely a year after the release of Belus, Varg has put another offering on the table, albeit different from the predecessor. Fallen marks a change of pace in the Burzum discography in an attempt to oppose the imagery and ideas behind the modern black metal scene. This shift has sparked controversy among fans, with some calling it a welcomed transition from Belus and others are claiming that a once monumental pillar in the scene has “fallen” from grace. In this sense, Varg has achieved his goal: to challenge his fan base. While some will say this new side of Burzum is insignificant in comparison to the classics it’s hard to ignore the fact that there is nothing out there that resembles it. With the amalgamation of conventional black metal riffs and traditional folk inspired vocal melodies Varg has managed to stay relevant in a time where the black metal scene has stagnated.

In the underground death metal world there is a new force emerging from England, cementing their name in the scene with their first EP. Amongst the hordes of ‘90s worship bands, Cruciamentum stands independently by pushing the old school customs to a new level. While taking influence from the local pioneers, Bolt Thrower, they add their own unique seasonings to the pot to keep the overused style appetizing. The endless barrage of driving riffs rejuvenates a stale sound which has more recently revolved around meticulously imitating the celebrated records of the past. Cruciamentum has proved to be a cut above the rest of the resurgence of death metal bands, stomping out the imposters and gaining praise among the old school fanatics.

In 2006, at the peak of their career, Tsjuder disbanded. They went out on a formidable note, with their last sigh, Desert Northern Hell, receiving the highest ratings of their three albums. Only four years later the band would reassemble and begin to write material for an extremely anticipated fourth full length. Many questions arouse regarding how they could match their last record or if reforming was really a wise decision. Although the band had only been separated briefly and kept all of the original members intact upon the second incarnation I kept my expectations at a neutral level. All I counted on was a solid black metal album, and that is exactly what we got. “The Daemon Throne” opens the record with blasting fury and a whirlwind of tremolo picking. The blazing pace does not subside as Tsjuder treads onward. Legion Helvete did not disappoint. Although it doesn’t reach the same quality of their masterpiece, it remains as a worthy follow up to it.

With their first full length Necros Christos established themselves as one of the premier occult bands and now they have bestowed upon us a second monolithic relic. In many ways Doom of the Occult resembles the debut, with its winding passages, possessed vocals, and esoteric atmosphere, however it also represents a striking change. While the lyrical content of Triune Impurity Rites focused on death and anti-Christian themes, this second offering presents a mystical journey through the ancient Middle East as well as hymns to Egyptian and Hindu deities. Rarely is there such lyrical brilliance in underground metal and it’s obvious much time and effort has gone into composing these narratives so articulately. Unfortunately it is a challenge to decode the dialogues without any background knowledge of the subject at hand. Of course, the lyrics are only one constituent of the supremacy that is this album. If it were not for the equally effective aura augmenting the lyrics the album would not be worth such praise. The doom laden guitar work, eerie keyboards, and folk instrumentals all take their part in this beast. Then the heinous vocals seal the tomb, giving the record a genuinely timeless sound. This will surely stand as an obelisk for years to come in the history of occult death metal.
