In Flames -- Chicago, IL -- February 21st, 2012
Line-up: Kyng, Veil of Maya, Trivium, In Flames
Venue: House of Blues IN FLAMES Sounds of a Playground Fading Deliver Us All for Me Trigger Alias Only For The Weak The Hive The Quiet Place Where the Dead Ships Dwell Fear Is the Weakness Come Clarity Ropes Darker Times Delight and Angers Cloud Connected The Mirror's Truth Take This Life A few comments. The musicianship of all the bands were exemplary, and I enjoyed every band quite a lot except for Trivium...their singer absolutely blows in my opinion however they put on a great show and had a very professional stage presence. Veil of Maya was good but too quiet for me. In Flames were fantastic, much better than I thought from reading all the reviews and watching a few videos from the tour. Their new songs sound great live, even ones I disliked (such as All For Me) were really fun. Also when Änders introduced the 2 old songs, he commented on how people are always telling them to play old songs, and when they do the crowd has very little response. The best part ( and worst ) of the speech for me was the fact that he seemed very sad about it, and gave off a vibe that they really wanted to play more old songs but didn't seem very enthusiastic about it. But right afterwards they broke into Only for the Weak everyone was jumping and going crazy, and even during The Hive people were still crowd surfing and moving around, so my hope is that they start to recognize that playing older material is not necessarily a bad thing. Both songs sounded fantastic, way better than I speculated. The Hive was the highlight for me in the sense that I wasn't expecting it to sound as good as it did. All in all this was one hell of a show and In Flames still remains one of my favorite bands to see live.

We got the same speech in Atlanta back in 2008, but they only played The Hive. Anders seems genuinely frustrated with the audience's lack of desire to hear the older material. They should pull a 'Maiden and do a tour of exclusively older stuff.

The problem is that the people who want them to play old stuff aren't the ones going to the shows, because they see the setlist with only 1 or 2 pre Clayman songs and decide not to spend their money. I'm convinced that In Flames have 2 different fanbases. One consists of fans going to see them live, and the other consists of people who post on metal-related forums.

Yeah, I understand what you mean. The only reason I skipped the show when they came here in January was because I didn't have the extra cash. I love everything they've put out (except for Lunar Strain, sorry), and don't understand all of the whining. These guys know how to put on an amazing show regardless of the setlist.
