I'm 28, at one point Slipknot and Hatebreed was underground, mind you that was 13 years ago

Then what term do you use for bands that aren't super duper underground but aren't mainstream and the average hard rock fan even doesn't know about? Midstream?

This, seriously to the average concert going a majority of the Mayhem bands are underground

In my opinion, nothing. There are very few metal bands I would describe as mainstream or underground. A majority of them are somewhere in between the two in terms of how known they are, so I just don't label as anything.

I don't label bands as underground ever. A "underground" band doesn't go around selling out the House Of Blue. They may not be well known to the crowd of mayhem going there for FFDP and ITM but to say underground makes you sound stupid.

It's not stupid at all to say they are Underground. Metal in and of itself is Underground. If You are a Mainstream Radio fan, Metallica, Slipkno, FFDonkeyPunch, etc is as heavy as it gets.

In other parts of the world, yes Metal is not Underground, it's celebrated. But here in the states, the average radio listener thinks Metallica is the Devils music with satanic chords, and vocals you can't understand.

If you grew up with Metal, that's different, but Mind you, Metal as a whole is one of the least listened to genres of music in the States. Children Of Bodom and Amon Amarth are INDEED underground to people who don't listen to it. Just as whoever mid to club level country, indie and Hip Hop artists who are not on mainstream radio are HUGE to those who listen to them.

But you never go around and hear anyone use the term underground to describe bands like COB or anything. You can walk into a Hot Topic and buy COB shirts and cds.

And where the fuck are we that people think Metallica is the devils music with vocals you can't understand? Are we in the 80's or in the deep south or something?
