Death - Symbolic

Genre: Death Metal

Ok, no bullshit, here it is. My favorite death metal album ever. Again, not much of a surprise since everyone has heard (or at least I hope everyone has heard) this album.

The difference between Symbolic and the rest of the albums on this list is that Symbolic has more of a personal meaning to me. I've listened to this album a ton of times over the years, posting lyrics as facebook statuses, and learning every single song on guitar at one point. It's just an album I could go back to over and over again to enjoy like it was the first time I was listening to it.

For some reason, a lot of people don't call Symbolic "death metal", usually progressive metal. The way I look at it is that The Sound of Perseverance is just straight up progressive metal, but Symbolic is a lot more heavier. No doubting it, there are progressive elements on Symbolic but there is enough intensity where it still is death metal as a whole. Sure not as intense or dirty as, you know, Scream Bloody Gore, but death metal is varied.

Anyway, I can assume almost anyone who remotely listens to death metal has heard Symbolic. But for those who haven't, I'll give a quick run down. The drums, guitars, and lyrics on here are incredible. Thank you Gene Hoglan for staying to play on this album! His drums, as usual, are crazy. They have a huge driving force behind the intensity of the album. As for the guitars, the solos really stand out. Very technical yet have an emotional feel to them as well. The lyrics are more than well thought out. It's like an epic story with every song. They are also a lot more philosophical in some parts. An example of the lyrics in general (Sacred Serenity) :

Maybe we could take a step back
And discover what leads us to attack
Time that is short - distance unknown
For them, each day life has just begun
Observing spirits on the wall
What are they telling you?

As the album goes through and hits the finale, "Perennial Quest", we see the end of the epic journey known as Symbolic. That song is one of the best ways to end an album. I find Symbolic to be the peak of Chuck's career. He definitely took everything to new levels on here. This album has been with me since I got into metal and will be one of those albums that will continue to stick with me for a very long time. R.I.P. Chuck.

Thanks for viewing my list of my favorite death metal albums! I hope you all enjoyed it and even found some new discoveries.

Track Listing:
Symbolic
Zero Tolerance
Empty Words
Sacred Serenity
1,000 Eyes - My favorite Death song!

Well I was kinda close! A worthy choice for sure though. It's one of those select few albums I would call perfect. Oh, and the intro to "Sacred Serenity" blows my mind every time I listen to it.

Symbolic is Death at their peak performance IMO, with TSOP coming in at a close second.

My favorite Death album and probably the only other album I can put above Altars in a death metal list. That iconic riff off of Symbolic is one of the greatest moments in metal history for me, on par with the first note of War Pigs, the opening riff to Aces High and that infamous backwards riff to Immortal Rites.

That one riff at around 2:00 on "Misanthrope" gives me chills every time. Same with the outro to "Perennial Quest". Symbolic is definitely up there on my list.
