![]() 35) Vreid – V Vreid aren’t like most of the Norwegian black metal bands out there. They don’t spend most of their time furiously tremolo picking their way from song to song, and don’t use blast beats all too often. They’re often labeled Black ‘n’ Roll and melodic black metal, but of those two I find melodic a lot more fitting and even then I don’t that label alone captures their vibe. These guys use a wide array of sounds, including classic rock, disco drum beats, and psychedelic influences. This is album is something that most black metal purists would have a hard time digesting. It sounds very clean, has melody, and feels like a 70’s rock album at times. This is definitely a great choice for all of those looking for something new with their black metal. Arche ![]() 34) Battles – Gloss Drop Most of the time when people think Math Rock, they think of bands like Giraffes? Giraffes!, Hella, or Lava Land; bands that play their instruments like madmen, shredding their way through every odd time signature imaginable. But Battles aren’t that. They use their instrument in a way that’s very unconventional, basically creating cool music loops and progressively add more and more as a song goes by. They do use odd time signatures and lots of syncopation so that is why they are labeled math rock. But let’s get down to the music. Webster should adopt Battles as another definition for the word 'fun'. Or 'playful'. These guys make me want to eat a pile a sugar as big as the pile of cocaine Tony Montana snorted at the end of Scarface and just jump off the walls. Their music is very energetic and just all around a fun time. Unfortunately, the fun vibe kind of dies down near the end of the album, but everything prior to that is great fun. Ice Cream ![]() 33) Long Distance Calling – Long Distance Calling Long Distance Calling’s eponymous record is an interesting one. They’re grouped with all the post-rock groups because their style does include the post-rock ethos of building on an idea for a whole song, dramatically making the piece sound more and more intense through crescendo until the song erupts into its climax and then dies down. But the band isn’t as laid back as most other post-rock groups. They have rockin’ groove and experiment a little bit. Not once have I heard a funk breakdown with slap bass in a post-rock song before. They remind of Scale the Summit sometimes, not due to technical ability or anything, but the tone they have and the melodies they create are very similar to ones you would hear on Carving Desert Canyons. This albums is highly infectious and a great listen. The Figrin D'an Boogie ![]() 32) Weedeater – Jason… The Dragon This album is a rocker. Weedeater write awesome riffs that punch you in the face and scream “I AM A MOTHERFUCKER”! Both the guitar and the bass have awesome tones that are just gritty and filthy as can be. And the drum work is in-your-face awesomesoness that pounds against your eardrums. This album takes you down to the boonies with tracks like Palm & Opium and banjo driven closer Whiskey Creek. This album is badass and there is no other way to describe it. There is only one problem with it. It is way too short. I don’t think these guys got them memo that stoner metal feeds on repetition. These guys write riffs that could easily be extended another minute or two, because the riffs are just that good. If you take away all the filler tracks, you have maybe 25 minutes of actually material. That’s not nearly enough. If these guys extended some the songs, this could be a Top 20 release, but alas, it’s too short. Mancoon ![]() 31) Fear the Fiasco – Hatch Here’s an album I can assure is on nobody else’s list. Fear the Fiasco are a Santa Rosa metal band. They are a pretty unique group. They are sort of a combination of math rock and progressive metal with jazz influences. They have both a singer who uses a very high register and a guy who uses low death growls, which of course provides quite the contrast but it work out really well. Musically, these guys combine very technical riffs, slammin’ metal riffs, soulful guitar solos, funky basslines, and lots of jazzy interludes. At about an hour long, the album is full of varying material and really shows that these guys have multiple strengths in both technical and song-writing ability. I highly recommend that fans of bands like Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero, and The Fall of Troy check these guys out. The album is available on iTunes to anybody who is interested. Fear the Fiasco
