A few of the stories I've seen just now call him "militant." I'm not if it was him or Sam Harris, but the term "militant Muslim" or "militant Christian" conjure up images that are VASTLY different than when the adjective is applied to atheism. Its unfair. Was he a prick? Yes. Was he confrontational? Yes. But he was only seen as "militant" because he so strongly questioned widely held beliefs. He was vital in making atheism mainstream, and I thank him for that.

He was probably called militant because he was an antitheist. Dawkins, Harris, and Dennett were just atheists. Hitchens took it one step further.
