They had tons of pits. Crowds don't influence my liking of a band.

TOP LIVE BANDS I SAW THIS YEAR

I'm going to go ahead and preface this category by saying this was probably the best year I've had in terms of amazing bands I've seen. Narrowing this list down to just the top ten is near impossible. But I tried my best. I'm leaving off bands that gave amazing performances, but these ten went that little extra and made their performances truly memorable.

10.

Warbringer

10/30 - Beaumont Club - Kansas City, MO

with LaZarus A.D., Landmine Marathon, Diamond Plate and Vanlade.

I'm lucky that the first time I saw Warbringer headling was for their tour for my favorite album of theirs. The group was seriously on fire that night and my voice got hoarse from screaming along. John is still a great frontman and they only reinforced my opinion that they are the best "thrash revival" band out there.

Mastodon

11/14 - Beaumont Club - Kansas City, MO

with Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang.

They made the list last year, and after another near-flawless performance, they're on it again. Most consistently amazing live band for me performing one of my top albums this year (spoiler alert) was just a fantastic experience. And they're all amazing musicians to boot.

Touche Amore

12/11 - Jackpot Saloon - Lawrence, KS

with Pianos Become The Teeth, Seahaven and Drought Years.

I've never seen a frontman leave everything he has up on a stage like Jeremy from Touche Amore does. Not only is there plenty of crowd participation with songs and stagediving, but Jeremy will get right down into the crowd and share the music with everyone in the venue. If TA's performances aren't legendary already, they will be.

Melt-Banana

10/9 - recordBar - Kansas City, MO

It's rare to have a band make such sonically interesting music on album and then translate it flawlessly live. Especially when it's spastic noise rock infused with pop music and grindcore. It's a spectacle in itself to see all the creative ways their guitarist can emit strange noises from his guitar and sea of pedals, but it's even more impressive how it all works; a sort of beauty in chaos. With cats.

Exhumed

07/21 - Aftershock - Merriam, KS

with Cephalic Carnage, Origin, Troglodyte, Upon The Wake, The Roman Holiday

This legendary band might do Carcass better than Carcass can today. They've inspired some of the best bands I've ever listened to and seen live, so to see them perform their fantastic version of gore-soaked deathgrind was a definite treat. 1980's extreme-gore B-movies in music form. And Matt Harvey can seriously shred.
